Liz Czukas collects college degrees she doesn’t use, types too loud, and always has a song stuck in her head. She is also one of the YA debut authors in the Class of 2K14 and author of one of the best YA books of this year in the form of “Ask Again Later”.

Having Liz in today’s “A Book and a Chat” was something I had been looking forward to after reading about her and the reviews of this debut book, and the show was no disappointment.

From an early age Liz has always dabbled in writing, not thinking she could make a career of it. Instead she studied Anthropology (Indiana Jones inspired), History (because she loves all kinds of stories), Classics (more stories), then Nursing (because she needed a job), then Midwifery. Along the way she even learned Spanish though only the words that she might use with a woman giving birth.

Liz got serious again when her son was born, using nap times to create her novels. After a couple of false starts she wrote “Ask Again Later” which was snapped up by a publisher and has opened the flood gates for Liz’s creative writing.

About “Ask Again Later” :

Despite what her name might suggest, Heart has zero interest in complicated romance. So when her brilliant plan to go to prom with a group of friends is disrupted by two surprise invites, Heart knows there’s only one drama-free solution: flip a coin.

Heads: The jock. He might spend all night staring at his ex or throw up in the limo, but how bad can her brother’s best friend really be?

Tails: The theater geek…with a secret. What could be better than a guy who shares all Heart’s interests–even if he wants to share all his feelings?

Heart’s simple coin flip has somehow given her the chance to live out both dates. But where her prom night ends up might be the most surprising thing of all…

With a second book “Top Ten Clues your Clueless” already on the way the name of Liz Czukas is one that will continue to delight all those lovers of YA literature.

My guest on today’s program is Heather McLaren is a Cherokee writer living in southern Illinois with her husband and four children. She began her life in an unfortunate situation, much like thousands of children in this country. She was born to a fifteen-year-old mother who could not take care of her.

From such a start heather was lucky to find her new parents both caring and able to help her realize her own potential. They told Heather the sky was the limit when it came to what she could accomplish in life.

Life though continued to have issues and abusive marriage and the loss of her first child before she was 21.

Then came the birth of Kimber Liliana—a child the doctors said could never survive the stroke she had suffered in the womb. Seven long months later Heather brought Kimber home to the amazement of the doctors. Though Kimber is still bedridden from spastic cerebral palsy, she celebrated her eleventh birthday last May—a joyous event Heather never takes for granted.

Life shad not finished with Heather and she was then herself diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but instead of giving in to her disease, she picked herself up, met and married her soul mate and began writing fantasy novels.

The result is “Mythos” the first book in “The Mer Chronicles” and what looks to me like being a truly wonderful YA Fantasy “must read” series.

About “Mythos” :

True love was the last thing David Cooley expected to find in the Bahamas, But the moment he laid eyes on Faren Sands, he knew he had found the girl of his dreams. How could he know she was a mermaid from the lost island of Atlantis?

Because of the strict laws regarding human contact, the couple flee the consequences of their forbidden passion, while at the same time they struggle to survive a conflict that has been brewing between the mermaids and sea demons for millennia.

Once the epic battle begins, fate forces David to make a decision that will forever affect his young life. Should he stick by the woman he loves, risking his mortality for a civilization that hates him?

Heather herself states how she wrote the book to inspire people…

She wanted to embrace her husband’s kind and and protective nature, thus bringing David Cooley’s character to life. (Her son) Bryce’s loyalty shines through as David’s best friend, and (her daughter) Charlie’s innocent and inquisitive nature and (her step daughter) Dakota’s playfulness triumph in future books. Heather’s youngest child’s bravery and determination to live despite her handicap was inspiration enough to immortalize her in black and white. By creating Cindel’s character (for Kimber), Heather hopes that readers will see people with special needs as having the same potential as every one else.

Shannon Delany first appeared on “A Book and a Chat” back in 2010 as one of the debut authors from Class of 2K10. Since that time she has become one o f the most popular and followed names in YA. This being the case,  it was great to have her as my first guest as I started a new set of shows on New Vision Radio, all be it after a few early teething issues with the new radio setup.

After growing up writing various articles as a freelance journalist, Shannon wrote a serialized version of “13 to Life” at Textnovel.com and won the first-ever cell phone novel contest in the western world.

This opened the flood gates to her writing future, and agent then a film request and finally a publishing house followed one after the other taking Shannon somewhat by surprise.

The success of “13 to Life” was just the beginning, four more books in the series followed with equal success and an ever expanding audience. Secrets and Shadows, Bargains and Betrayals, Destiny and Deception, and Rivals and Retribution brought the series to a wonderful 5 novel selection.

Now Shannon is showing a slightly darker but still brilliantly written side in her new Weather Witch series.

About the Weather witch series:

Some fled the Old World to avoid war, and some fled to leave behind magic. Yet even the fiercely regulated New World–with its ranks and emphasis on decorum–cannot staunch the power that wells up in certain people, influencing the weather and calling down storms. Hunted, the Weather Witches are forced to power the rest of the population’s ships, as well as their every necessity, and luxury, in a time when steampower is repressed.

Jordan Astraea hails from a flawless background with no taint of magick, but on her seventeenth birthday she is accused of summoning an unscheduled storm. Taken from her family, Jordan is destined to be enslaved on an airship. But breaking Jordan may prove to be the very thing her carefully constructed society cannot weather.

And losing Jordan forever may force her beau, Rowen, to be the hero he would have never otherwise dared become.

“Weather Witch” was released last year with book two “Stormbringer” following up at the beginning of this year. Book three in the series “Thunderstruck” is sdue to be released on  May 20.

The show shared just how far this multi talented lady has come in the few years since her first release and proved that she was just the guest to have for the first show on this new radio station.

I am pleased to have another of the Class of 2K14 debut YA authors in the form of the talented Gayle Rosengren as my guest on today’s on “A Book and a Chat”.

After developing her writing skills while being copy-editor at American Girl and having written stories for children in Cricket, Ladybug, Jack and Jill and Children’s Digest magazines. Along with knowledge gained while working as a children’s and young adult librarian at a public library, Gayle has finaly published her debut novel.

Gayle’s debut novel “What The Moon Said” was inspired by events in her mother’s childhood. From these memories the seeds grew into a fictional story around the character Gayle imagined her mother to be as a child.

About “What The Moon Said”:  (taken from authors web page)

What the Moon Said is the story of 10 year-old Esther and her family and how their love makes good times better and bad times bearable during the Great Depression.

Their move from the big city of Chicago to a small ramshackle farm in Wisconsin is full of changes for Esther.  Some of them are good, like being able to have a dog at last.  But some of them are bad, like having to use an outhouse because there is no indoor plumbing!

Join Esther on her “great adventure” and find out if she ever earns the hug she yearns for from her mother.   Find out what Esther discovers about luck—good and bad—and about the superstitions so important to her mother.  Find out what the moon said.

Though said to be a YA book, I can this wonderful story of childhood and hope is said to be for the YA audience I can see it being read and enjoyed by those of all ages, and with a second novel already planned to be released in 2105, the name Gayle Rosengrem is one to look out for…. The signs are there.

Melissa Landers my guest today, was one of the Class of 2K13 however her debut YA Sci-Fi romance novels publication was delayed so she is now my first member of the Class of 2K14 to appear on this year’s “A Book and a Chat” shows.

Not that she is a debut author over all writing under the name “Macy Beckett” she is the author of “The Sultry Springs” series and “The Dumont Bachelors” series of romance novels.

Her novel “Alientated” though the first book she ever wrote, has taken a few years to finally see the light of day, but believe me it is a book well worth waiting for, and from the number of pre read request on sites such as “Goodreads” it seems many others believe the same.

About “Alienated”: (taken from OneFourKidLit site)

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

Alienated was finally released this month receiving great reviews many already asking for book 2 which is already written and will be released early 2015.

Today’s guest is Douglas E. Richards New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of WIRED, its sequel, AMPED, THE CURE, and six critically acclaimed middle-grade adventures enjoyed by kids and adults alike. He has been widely praised for his ability to weave action, suspense, and science into riveting novels that brilliantly straddle the thriller and science fiction genres.

Leaving a career as a biotech executive (he even has a virus named after him) Douglas started his writing journey with a middle-grade/YA science fiction trilogy “The Prometheus Project“. While written for that age group the series has been critically acclaimed by kids and adults alike.

Wanting to branch into the Thriller market one day Douglas launched his story “Wired” as an E-Book, the rest as they say is history. Almost overnight Wired took off, throwing him into the New York Times and USA Today best sellers list and bringing his name and his talent to thousands of readers. This early success was followed by “Amped” which enforced the name Douglas E. Richards in the thriller world.

Now a new thriller has been released in the form of “The Cure”

About “The Cure”:  (taken from the authors web site)

Erin Palmer had a devastating encounter with a psychopath as a child. Now a grad student and scientist, she’s devoting her life to studying these monsters. When her research catches the attention of Hugh Raborn, a brilliant neuroscientist who claims to have isolated the genes responsible for psychopathic behavior, Erin realizes it may be possible to reverse the condition, restoring souls to psychopaths. But to do so, she’ll not only have to operate outside the law, but violate her most cherished ethical principles.

As Erin becomes further involved with Raborn, she begins to suspect that he harbors dark secrets. Is he working for the good of society? Or is he intent on bringing humanity to its knees?

Hunted by powerful, shadowy forces, Erin teams up with another mysterious man, Kyle Hansen, to uncover the truth. The pair soon find themselves pawns in a global conspiracy–one capable of destroying everything Erin holds dear. And forever altering the course of human history . . .

At a time when society seems to be facing an epidemic of psychopathic monsters, The Cure explores this condition, and the surprisingly thorny ethical and moral dilemmas surrounding it, within an explosive, thought-provoking, roller-coaster-ride of a thriller that will have readers turning pages deep into the night.

As New York Times bestselling author Douglas Preston described the book…

“The Cure will keep you turning the pages all night long.”

Douglas has not forgotten his Science Fiction and books for younger readers either; novels like “Out of This World”, “The Devils Sword” and “Ethan Pritcher, Body Switcher” have also been produced by this talented author.

Despite a storm causing severe program interruptions during tonight’s show, my guest Dina von Lowenkraft managed to get through the show and towards the end without line interruption. Mind you, the fact that Dina is in Belgium and it was gone midnight there, alone was a challenge, but in the end the show was well worth getting through.

Dina was born in the US and has lived on 4 continents, worked as a graphic artist for television and as a consultant in the fashion industry before producing her first but I’m sure not last novel. The ability to create her own worlds and share them with the reader is helped by her being a black belt in Karate and a keen horse rider. In her debut YA fantasy novel “Dragon Fire” Dina is able to paint with words the land and the characters that merge together to make a “must read” debut novel.

About “Dragon Fire “:  (taken from Amazon)

Some choices are hard to live with.
But some choices will kill you.

When seventeen-year-old Anna first meets Rakan in her hometown north of the Arctic Circle, she is attracted to his pulsing energy. Unaware that he is a shape-shifting dragon, Anna is drawn into a murderous cycle of revenge that pits Rakan and his clan against her best friend June.

Torn between his forbidden relationship with Anna, punishable by death, and restoring his family’s honor by killing June, Rakan must decide what is right. And what is worth living – or dying – for.

The story is set in arctic Norway which enables Dina to share a unique world where humans and dragons and other mythical creatures are the norm. She is able to introduce intriguing secondary characters in the book, which can only lead to further books from this “one to follow” author.

As one reviewer put it…

I was so involved when reading this book that I found myself caught up in the drama and splendor of this mystical realm. The characters were interesting and well defined and the story was interesting, exciting and entertaining.

I’m looking forward to reading her next book!

Reviewer… me too!!!

On the sixth and final Book and a Chat about bullying I am pleased to have Kaitlin Bevis as a guest. The past five shows have covered many aspect of bullying from across all ages and I hope the shows have helped a few people along the way. Indeed I know from an email I received after one show they have indeed made a difference to some people.

Kaitlin herself has been on both sides of the bullying fence being bullied and being the bully, attending a small town school where classes were about twelve people and secrets were hard to keep. During the show she shared with us about one of her friends who with good looks, money a smart mind and a pleasant personality one would think would be “the” girl, instead because of the plus things she was bullied.

Kaitlin was one of those people who knew from an early age that she wanted to be a writer. She spent her childhood curled up with a book, and a pen… Yes a pen… as If the ending didn’t agree with her, she rewrote it.

After studying English at college she started writing articles for truuconfessions.com and Athens Parent Magazine before starting her wonderful “Daughters of Zeus” and her first trilogy about Persephone.

While about a Greek Gods and Goddesses set in a modern setting there is always a background of bullying, anybody who knows a little about Greek Mythology will know Zeus could be a bit of a bully.

The series which to me is a must read, consists of “Persephone”, “Daughter of the Earth and Sky” and “The Iron Queen”, this is going to be followed by a trilogy about “Aphrodite” again set in a modern world.

About “Persephone”: (taken from Amazon)

There are worse things than death, worse people too.

The “talk” was bad enough, but how many teens get told that they’re a goddess? When her mom tells her, Persephone is sure her mother has lost her mind. It isn’t until Boreas, the god of winter, tries to abduct her that she realizes her mother was telling the truth. Hades rescues her, and in order to safely bring Persephone to the Underworld he marks her as his bride. But Boreas will stop at nothing to get Persephone. Despite her growing feelings for Hades, Persephone wants to return to the living realm. Persephone must find a way to defeat Boreas and reclaim her life.

This first book has already received almost a 100 reviews on Amazon filled with comments such as…

“‘Persephone’ is a fun, imaginative, smart retelling of my favorite myth, fusing modern culture with a rich world of magic. I had such a great time reading this. I ate it up in just a few days. With its irreverent sense of humor and its intelligent references, it reminds me most of Joss Whedon, in particular the livelier, funnier seasons of “Buffy” or “Angel.”

All in all a good way to finish of my six shows about bullying. So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest on today’s last show about bullying on Bullying – A Book and a Chat with Kaitlin Bevis

On this the fifth of my six shows featuring “bullying” my guest is teacher and fellow Connecticut author Shelia Murphy Adams.

From almost the time she could hold a crayon Shelia has loved writing, creating many poems and short stories, of which I am pleased to say, many from as far back as elementary school still exist.

Somewhat late in life Shelia became a teacher and as we learned from the show was not able to use her own experience as a mother but also share with her pupils the full process of creating a and editing a book.

So far with four books in print, Shelia has covered many subjects.

Her latest novel “The Coolest Kids in School” covers the issue of bullying. The story takes place in a school that is being ruled by a bully named Robbie.  When Pete, a tough looking new kid, starts school, the students worry that he will soon join forces with Robbie.  But Pete has no interest in being the class bully.  He actually thinks Robbie’s behaviors are lame.  Will Pete be able to convince Robbie and the other kids that being cool doesn’t mean being a bully?  Can Pete prove that a person can be both COOL and KIND?

Like her latest book, Shelia’s first book “Beads, Bands & a Brass Ring”, is illustrated by her father Ed Murphy. The book is a result of a memoir study which Shelia and her fourth graders explored.

Louie Digs Up a Surprise was her second published book, Shelia describes the reason for writing this book thus…

As a teacher and mother, I have too often heard the words “I wish I could…” followed by any number of abilities or activities.  I wish I could play soccer like…, I wish I could draw like…, I wish I could do math like…  Children are so quick to compare themselves to others, always measuring their own abilities against those of their friends.  My wish as a teacher and mother is that all children will come to appreciate the qualities that make them special.

In the book Shelia creates a lovable character named Louie, a young puppy living on the Harrison’s farm.  Louie loves playing with his friends on the farm, but he can’t help comparing his abilities to those of his friends.

Next came Puffy No Nose he story of a much-loved and well-worn stuffed bunny, Puffy No-Nose, who finds himself replaced by a new favorite toy on Christmas morning.

These books for me with their teachers notes and information are ideal for any school library and a great gift for all children.

Today’s guest for this the third in the shows about bullying is Gae Polisner, perhaps half author and half mermaid, she first appeared on “A Book and a Chat” as one of the Class of 2K11 with her great YA novel ”The Pull Of Gravity”.

The book has since that time gone from strength to strength with some wonderful reviews on Amazon, today though Gae joined me to talk about “bullying’.

For much of her time at High School, Gae was bullied pretty much on a daily basis, while hard to remember the details of the how’s and whys she knows that she did NOT deserve it.

Despite many issues with both verbal and physical bullying, Gae’s view is…

“If you are suffering, if you are being bullied, even if no one is doing what they should to STOP those bullies: it DOES GET BETTER.** And, SOONER than you think!

There comes a point in your life where you not only DON’T FEEL HURT OR ANGRY OR BROKEN anymore, but you DON’T EVEN CARE about those moments. If anything, you look back at them as something that made you STRONGER, and a more compassionate person. Good qualities, mind you,  that will serve you well later in life.”

Gae is also a supporter of “Stand For the Silent” (https://www.facebook.com/SFTSorg) on Facebook  “Empowering youth to stand above bullying.”.. Please check them out.

On the writing front “The Pull of Gravity”  was named a Bank Street College Best Children’s book, 2012, a PSLA Best YA book for 2011, and won a 2011 Nerdy Award for Best YA Fiction. It was also a YALSA Readers’ Choice and CYBIL’s nominee.

Gae’s second book “The Summer of Letting Go” will be out next year and I hope to have her back on the program to discuss what I am sure will be another hit for this talented author and caring lady.
