It is a pleasure to have another of the member of the Class of 2K13 (debut YA and mid grade authors) in the form of Tamera (like camera) Will Wissinger. Who joined me to chat about her debut book “Gone Fishing”, a charming new children’s novel written in verse.

The middle of three children Tamera remembers well going fishing with her parents when she was young, and I still when her schedules allow, going fishing with her husband. In fact several scenes from the book are taken straight from her family fishing experiences.

About “Gone Fishing” (taken from authors web site):

Using a wide variety of poetic forms – quatrains, ballads, iambic meter, rhyming lists, concrete poetry, tercets and free verse – this debut author tells the story of a nine-year-old boy’s day of fishing. Sibling rivalry, the bond between father and son, the excitement – and difficulty – of fishing all add up to a day of adventure any child would want to experience.

Matthew Cordell illuminates this novel-in-verse throughout with his energetic black-and-white line drawings.
While each poem can be read and enjoyed on its own, the poems work together to create a story arc with conflict, crisis, resolution and character growth.

The back matter of this book equips the reader with a Poet’s Tackle Box of tools and definitions for understanding the various poetic forms the author uses in this story.

The book has received numerous praising reviews from people of all ages.

“Just the thing for readers with a burgeoning interest in poetry—or angling.”
—Publishers Weekly

“A playful verse narrative of the joys and perils of a family fishing trip. . . . This tender, well-crafted sibling story should hook many readers.”
—Kirkus

“Engaging verse that’s just the right depth and length for chapter-book readers. . . A solid, entertaining story to hook children on poetry.”
—Booklist

“All of Sam’s episodes take the form of poems, each discreetly labeled by its poetic form, which is then defined at the end of the book. . . most will enjoy the notion that there are as many ways to tell a tale as to catch a fish.”
—Bulletin

The book is a delightful book that not only will entertain readers of all ages with a compelling storyline, as well as introduce them to many forms of poetry.

It was another of our one hour specials as I introduce to the audience and chat with another member of the “Class of 2K13” in the form of author Liesl (like Weasel) Shirtliff.

Liesl grow up in Salt Lake City, Utah the fifth of eight children, a childhood filled with magic be it from her love of dancing, singing, playing the piano or reading, she read Grimm’s Fairy Tales so often she wore through the binding.

Like the Brady Bunch, plus two she remembers summer when her parents piled all the kids in a 12-passenger van, complete with a license plate that said 8SGREAT, and drove to California where she spent magical summers on mountains and lakes and beaches. The fact she later had to drive that same van to school somehow takes a little away from the story.

Her love of music continued and she received a degree from Brigham Young University in music, dance, and theater, thinking her life would involve belting out show songs, this  changed with the birth of her first child, Liesl settling to the slightly quieter art of writing.

Now Liesl drawing from her love of fairy tales shares her debut midgrade book “Rump”.

About “Rump” (taken from OneFor KidLit)

In a magical kingdom where your name is your destiny, 12-year-old Rump is the butt of everyone’s joke.

Rump has never known his full name—his mother died before she could tell him. So all his life he’s been teased and bullied for his half-a-name. But when he finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. For Rump discovers he can spin straw into gold. Magical gold.

His best friend Red Riding Hood warns him that magic is dangerous—and she’s right! That gold is worth its weight in trouble. And with each thread he spins, Rump weaves himself deeper into a curse.

There’s only one way to break the spell: Rump must go on a quest to find his true name, along the way defending himself against pixies, trolls, poison apples, and one beautiful but vile-mannered queen. The odds are against him, but with courage and friendship—and a cheeky sense of humor—Rump just might triumph in the end.

As we heard during the show there were a few items that had to be changed along the way, such as the name of the donkey, however the resulting novel is a fairy tale master piece for all to read and enjoy.

As one reviewer put it…

I had never been a big fan of the fairy tale, Rumplestiltskin but this book changed my mind! Such a fun, humorous and clever take on the classic. I read it to my children ages 5 – 9 and they couldn’t wait for bedtime when they could listen to another chapter of this magical book full of trolls, fairies, bullies, magic and a surprising hero. One of the best children’s books I’ve read in a long time. I can’t wait for another book by Liesl Shurtliff.

As we learned there is another book based on Jack and the Beanstalk already on the horizon, and I for one can’t wait to read more from this talented author.

Nadine Singel writing under “N.M Singel” is another author who I came across when hopping around “The Next Big Thing” blog sites. I was really impressed when reading about her book “The Wicked Passage“.

Nadine is an award winning author who studied at Warwick, one of the best universities in England. She has written two plays and several short stories as well as well as being the recipient of the Iren Ryan acting scholarship for her performance at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.

Taking her love for literature along with a passion for Star Wars and Star Trek, Nadine has been able to produce “The Wicked Passage” the first in what I believe will be a much read and loved series about “Blake Wyatt”

About “The Wicked Passage”: (taken from Amazon)

Thirteen year old Blake Wyatt dug his bloodied fingers into the splintered railing of the ancient ship, struggling for footing in the violent storm. He wants desperately to wake from this nightmare…but he isn’t sleeping. The mutiny is real and the great Christopher Columbus is about to be murdered-Dagonblud’s latest victim in his quest to erase the world’s history by stealing its past, with control of the future as his ultimate reward.

It’s up to Blake, the youngest in his family of sapphire travelers, to master his incredible new powers so he can sneak through time, find, and destroy the Tolucan leader. But Dagonblud has other plans.

Will Blake ever see his family again? or will Dagonblud eliminate the last sapphire traveler standing between him and world supremacy? Strap yourself in to see how a bizarre assignment from a substitute teacher quickly turns deadly in this epic thrill-ride through time. The only thing that is certain is that Blake’s life, and the world around him, will never be the same.

Like many other authors today’s guest Halli Lilburn has always dabbled in writing poetry and short stories, perhaps as she says it was her own therapy for those teenage years. She carried on this love for writing in her later life having many article and short stories published before finally creating her debut YA sci-fi adventure novel “Shifters“.

The idea for the book came to Halli one night in a dream, never really thinking herself however to be a Sci-Fi writer it was a surprise to her when the idea for “Shifters” came to her.

About “Shifters”: (taken from Leigh Covington blog)

The book is YA speculative fiction about a girl, Lina and her friends who stumble upon a government conspiracy taking place right in their school.
The corrupt branch is called the Special Force and their purpose is to weed out students who they deem have corrupt DNA to create a superior race.

Students get expelled and go missing. Even more shocking, Lina finds out the Special Force is sending these teens to another reality.
Lina steals the power to shift into new realities and uses this power to escape the Special Force and attempt to rescue her friends. It’s very plot driven, like a video game.

The book made it high up the list at Amazon and received reviews like…

I found this YA novel engrossing and immensely invigorating. There’s no wasted wordage, no dropped plot threads, just moment-to-moment excitement and adventure, with the romance, friendship, character integrity, and villainous “overlords” woven in intricately. Just as importantly, the story line is so very plausible: almost any contemporary society today is aware of how close it could come to a fascist “Big Brother” type society, without even realizing until too late.

The characters in this book are at first selectively chosen students of a new University, selected presumably for their higher capabilities. Yet they don’t understand, amid all the rigid rules and strictures that their value is in their DNA. It is not until one of her former neighborhood playmates, a boy she has known for years, disappears from the University that Lina realizes something terrible is afoot, and she, Yussef, and Jan begin to explore what it is-and discover the concept of “Shifters”-those who can pass among alternate dimensions.

With the second book in the now trilogy already underway, I can see the main shifting Halli will do is towards the top of the Amazon selling list.

Yesterdays show was one of my one hour specials, as I welcomed another of the Class of 2K13 debut YA authors in the form of Justina Ireland.

Justina though doing the normal school writing did not really think about creating her first novel until recently. Far from following her love for historical events she created a YA novel more about dangerous girls than dangerous times. her debut book being called “Vengeance Bound”.

Justina says about the book

“Vengeance Bound is really the product of two things: my time spent in the Army and being a light-skinned black girl and the expectations attached to both of those situations.”

Starting out she had her main character as a light-skinned black girl Justina found it a struggle to create the story, she then, as we learned during the show, changed her to the stereotypical dumb blonde and the story just flowed.

About “Vengeance Bound”: (taken Dark Faerie Tales blog)

Cory Graff is not alone in her head. Bound to a deal of desperation made when she was a child, Cory’s mind houses the Furies—the hawk and the serpent—lingering always, waiting for her to satisfy their bloodlust. After escaping the asylum where she was trapped for years, Cory knows how to keep the Furies quiet. By day, she lives a normal life, but by night, she tracks down targets the Furies send her way. And she brings down Justice upon them.

Cory’s perfected her system of survival, but when she meets a mysterious boy named Niko at her new school, she can’t figure out how she feels about him. For the first time, the Furies are quiet in her head around a guy. But does this mean that Cory’s finally found someone who she can trust, or are there greater factors at work? As Cory’s mind becomes a battlefield, with the Furies fighting for control, Cory will have to put everything on the line to hold on to what she’s worked so hard to build.

The book is due to be launched in April and Justina already has a second book possibly being called “Promise of Shadows” scheduled for March next year.

Whenever we had plums or prunes when I was young or in fact
anything with stones, we used to count them up afterwards with the “tinker, tailor,
soldier, sailor… rhyme. My guest today could almost relate to that going though
the artistic hobbies she’s had.

C Elizabeth, has dabbled in many different things, art,
photography, needlework, you name it she’s tried it, but always the original momentum
has died out and she has got bored with the hobby.

That was until she started listening to the story in her
head and writing her first book in 2009, even then the ending came to her
before the beginning and she basically wrote each chapter backwards. However
the story was there and with becoming an author found the artistic outlet she’d
always been looking for.
Written in just 11days her first book “Absolute Obsession
was her first book, and the start of what will be a three book series. This contemporary
adult romance novel was quickly followed by book two of the series “Absolute
Obstruction”
and a third book is already in the editing stage.
After her initial success, C. Elizabeth has now turned her
hand to YA literature in the shape of her latest book, the absorbing YA
paranormal novel “Soul Control”.
About “Soul Control”: (taken from Amazon)
“Lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil.”These words ring true for seventeen-year-old Saydi Gardiner upon discovering
her ancestry. But if she has any doubts, further confirmation is forthcoming
and it comes in the form of a wickedly gorgeous Nathanael Braxton, when he
steals her heart and cuddles into her sole – the last place the boy should be.

Nineteen-year-old Nathanael’s unrelenting good looks aren’t the only thing that
make him dangerous – and he knows it! However, his caring half-human self
struggles with a loyalty – a loyalty that binds him to the hunt for the soul
that will give his family the power they seek. There’s only one problem: When
he finds her, Nathanael falls in love with his prey – Saydi

.

The book has already received many great reviews from the YA
blogosphere, comments such as…
This book was engrossing from the very beginning, with a
great plot and great characters.  It was a fantastic take on the “good vs.
evil” battle, with neither side being entirely good nor entirely evil.
That made all of the characters that much more believable, despite their
obvious paranormal backgrounds.

I also liked that the story didn’t just center on
Nathanael and Saydi the entire book, but included the other characters with
true stories of their own.  The story line between Nathanael and his mom
was one of my favorites, full of raw emotion and angst.  The struggles
between Saydi and her three best friends were ever changing and their
involvement with Nathanael’s brothers added a lot to the story.
(The Caffeinated Diva)
With the third book in the “Absolute Obsession” series, plus
a others in her YA series I can see the name C. Elizabeth being one to follow
in the future.

Today’s show  was
another of those wonderful one hour specials well I meet and chat with one of
the wonderful YA debut authors from the Class of 2K13, Nicole McInnes.
Nicole has always been immersed in literature from growing
up spending her time hid away in her elementary school library that ended in
her winning a bar of Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut chocolate to getting her Bachelor’s
Degree in Literature and a Master’s Degree in English.
Along the way Nicole tried her hand at several different styles
and formats until finally after a little prodding she turned her talents to
writing YA (young adult) literature, the result of which is her debut book “Brianna
on the Brink
”.
Listening to Nicole during the show, it is a little
surprising that she did not produce a book on horses or even soap making. Both
of which have played a part in Nicole’s life
She has already received such comments as…
I started reading Brianna a couple of days ago and I can’t
stop. The author brings the emotions and angst of the American teenager clearly
to the reader.
A Nicole shared, she has even received messages from people
who have read the book and found their eyes tearing up, and such is the emotion
that Nicole has been able to produce within her book.
About “Brianna on the Brink”: (taken from lucky13 group web
site)
Sixteen-year-old Brianna Taylor finds
herself lost, alone and pregnant after a one-night-stand (let’s just say it’s
complicated). Just when she’s got nowhere left to turn, help arrives from the
one person who is closest to her big mistake, but accepting that help will
leave Brianna forced to choose between clinging to the ledge of fear and
abandonment – or jumping into the unknown where a second chance at hope might
just be waiting.
Though her book is not officially being launched until March
she has already ruffled the YA bloggers pond.

Each year a group of debut YA and mid-grade authors form a
group to help each other, over the last few years many of these authors have
not only appeared on “A Book and a Chat” but gone on to bigger and perhaps
better things. Today on the show is the first in this years “Class of 2K13″ Liz
Fichera
”.

While Liz is a debut “YA” author she has already two fiction
publications to her name.
Liz is one of the few authors that include Native American
people as main characters in her stories. Living in Phoenix, Arizona, she surrounded
by over 20 Native American communitiesLiz writes storie.

Her
first book “Captive Spirit” was set in the
sixteenth century in the area
now known as Phoenix, Arizona we follow the story of Aiyana, a young tribal
woman of the White Ant Clan.

This was followed by “Craving Perfect” described by one reviewer as…

A wonderful novel that takes you on a magical treadmill ride. Downtrodden
Grace isn’t happy with her lackluster life and yearns to be someone people pay
attention to. And then — after a spectacular treadmill fall — she suddenly
is. But is perfect really all she hoped for?

‘Craving Perfect’ has the perfect ingredients for a delicious summer read.

Liz writes about ordinary teens who do extraordinary
things. This is very true about her debut YA novel
Hooked“.
About Hooked (taken from Lunas Little
Library):
When Native American Fredericka ‘Fred’ Oday is invited to
become the only girl on the school’s golf team, she can’t say no. This is an
opportunity to shine, win a scholarship and go to university, something no one
in her family has done.
But Fred’s presence on the team isn’t exactly welcome —
especially not to rich golden boy Ryan Berenger, whose best friend was kicked
off the team to make a spot for Fred.

But there’s no denying that things are happening between the girl with the
killer swing and the boy with the killer smile.
Though this is her debut YA novel a companion novel “Player”
is already optioned to soon hit the book shelves and with several other books
in the pipeline we shall, I am sure, hear a lot more from Liz Fichera.

Tonight’s scheduled guest had to cancel, so I took the
chance to share with the listeners about a group I have been working with and sharing
with that offer a chance for authors and readers to help those recovering from
the tragic happenings in Newtown/Sand Hook here in Connecticut.
The group is “Words Heal” and hope  this blog and the show will pass on their
message.

Many people have been wondering how they can
help the school, children, and families of those affected by the
shooting in Newtown and many groups have been collecting teddy bears and
school supplies. Here is another option for you.

Several CT
children’s book and YA authors are in preliminary discussions with the
Newtown school district to bring healing all affected by the horrific
event. We are working in conjunction
with grief counselors and a school psychologist to teach students how to
journal through their emotions. We are hoping that through writing
these children find hope and a way of expressing their thoughts and
emotions. We are asking for people to donate journals and inscribe their
own encouraging words to the student recipient on the inside cover. If
you feel moved to donate to Words Heal, please send your inscribed
journals to:

Words Heal
c/o Knee High Academy
43 Hall Avenue
Wallingford, CT 06492

All donations should be received by January 31st and please know we
will send all journals directly to the Newtown school guidance
department. We will keep you posted as to our progress.

Instructions:
1. All journals donated should be inscribed by the donor with a positive message.
(preferably, no spiral notebooks)
2. Lined journals for student 3rd grade and up.
3. Primary journals for younger students (half lined half blank for illustration)
4. Journals must be received by January 31st

Sometimes
during the over 500 shows I have introduced there is a guest that my family,
mainly my children pick up on and follow. When Amy Fellner Dominy previously
appeared on the show as one of the Class of 2K11 YA authors with her debut book
OyMG”, not only was the hour spent with Amy a totally fun show, but
her book has become a firm favorite with my whole family, who have been waiting
and perhaps pestering Amy for a follow up novel now with her new book
Audition & Subtraction”, there wish has been granted, my
daughter was also lucky enough to get an advanced copy of Amy’s new book…
WHICH THEY LOVED!
For those
who do not remember “OyMG” here is a brief synopsis.
Ellie Taylor loves nothing better than a good argument.
After all, she’s been arguing with her Zeydeh (that’s grandfather in Yiddish)
since she could talk. So when she gets accepted to the Christian Society Speech
and Performing Arts summer camp, she’s sure she can win the final tournament
and a scholarship to the best speech school in the country. Unfortunately, the
competition at CSSPA is hot—literally. His name is Devon and whether she likes
it or not, being near him makes her sizzle. Luckily she’s up for the
challenge—until she begins to suspect that the private scholarship’s benefactor
has negative feelings toward Jews. Will hiding her true identity be worth a
shot at her dream?
While Amy’s books fit between middle grade and YA I can tell
you from my own reading and from numerous other reviews that Amy’s books are
for all ages.
About “Audition
& Subtraction”
(Taken from Amy’s web site)
Best friends Tatum and Lori are used to doing everything
together—including a clarinet/flute duet for District Honor Band auditions. But
all that changes when Michael transfers to their middle school, and into their
band. Suddenly, not only is he competition for Tatum’s spot on stage, but he’s
stealing Lori, too. Tatum is determined to stop him, and hold on to what she’s
got.
She enlists the help of her good friend, Aaron, but now he seems to
believe her fib that they’re boyfriend and girlfriend. And her mom, to cope
with a separation from her dad, is performing in Community Theater, of all
things! Amy Fellner Dominy composes an equally heartwarming and hilarious story
of how holding tight to what you have can keep you from reaching for your
dreams—and how oftentimes the best way to move forward is by going solo.
While I can’t hear about band camp without thinking of the
American Pie “One time at band camp…” it is a pleasure to see the people in
this new book are “normal” not “Band Geeks” to them it’s just a another subject
that is taught at school. Also it is great to see that though the parents are separated
there is no, good or evil parent, it is like most divorced families that though
separated the main aim of the parents was to support their children.
The book covers many issues  from friendship to standing on your own two
feet and being by Amy there is always humor, it is certainly a book that not
just myself but my whole family can recommend.
