My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” could be said to be a late bloomer in the literary world his first book finally saw the light of literary day decade after he first wrote it, so saying since that first completion Mike Lynch has continued to produce one “must read” novel after another covering many different book store shelves.

Mike’s first novel “When the Sky Fell” which was jointly written with Brandon Barr will soon be joined by a follow up sci-fi novel “After the Sky Fell”. However Mike’s latest novel is in fact a romance story “Love’s Second Chance”.

About “Love’s Second Chance”: (taken from Mike Web Page)

Everyone deserves a second chance in life, no matter how unlikely. Dana Rogers learns this powerful truth while she serves as the pastor’s assistant at New Covenant Church, the center of community life in the town of Fairhaven for the past two hundred years. There she has caught the eye of Evan Johnson, a successful real estate agent and kindred spirit. But the tragic death of her fiancé has wounded her so deeply she has vowed never to love another man again, including Evan.

A steady decline in church attendance the past few months has become a source of concern for Dana, which if not stopped she fears it could have an adverse affect on the town. Despite her strong resistance, Evan helps Dana work through the pain of her loss, developing a relationship with her neither of them thought possible. In a stunning turn of events, New Covenant Church suffers a devastating setback, one that threatens to undo everything Dana has worked to save, including the first embers of a relationship with Evan.

As one reviewer stated… “This book gets two thumbs up from me. If you love a good romance, this book is a must read…” a comment I totally agree with.

On Today’s “A Book and a Chat” I have a guest that will help many of us slightly older readers, whose doctor might have told them “You’re not getting any younger”.

Robert Henry, age 56, is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Certified Personal Trainer, a Certified Specialist in Fitness Nutrition, and a Certified Wellness Coach. His awareness of fitness and nutrition began at the age of 29. When he first started to exercise, it was mostly for the purpose of increasing body weight through the addition of lean muscle mass. However, more than 20 years later, at the age of 52, after years of being lean and enjoying good health, Robert’s experienced an undesired increase in body fat and his health profile changed in the wrong direction

The loss of that body fat and the reversal of new and undesirable trends in his health profile became Robert’s new exercise goals. By re-booting his exercise regimen and further “tweaking” his nutrition, he successfully accomplished his new goals and, as he likes to say, discovered his “inner athlete”.

Robert has now shares his own success and information in his health/fitness how-to book, Age Re-Defined.

About”Age Re-Defined” (taken from Amazon)

Your state of health, how you feel, and how you look are more within your control than you think – even in your forties and fifties (and beyond). This book addresses exercise, fitness, nutrition, wellness, and the mind-body connection. Its purpose is not to promote any particular exercise program or diet plan – although its coverage of exercise, fitness, and nutrition is extensive – but rather to inform, educate, and motivate the reader on the importance of being proactive in one’s own health, fitness, and wellness. Even if you are already physically active, this book can assist you in evaluating the effectiveness of your current exercise efforts. Not only does the book cite to other authorities, but it also conveys the author’s own journey and his own positive results achieved through exercise, nutrition, and the mind-body connection.

The importance of nutrition is explained and heavily stressed. One comes away with an increased or renewed awareness of the importance of quality nutrition in optimal health, fitness, and wellness. Other apsects of wellness – apart from exercise and nutrition – are also addressed. A foundational background in exercise and fitness concepts is provided. The author shares his own philosophy of exercise and his own health and fitness journey, with particular emphasis on the challenges faced by him in his early fifties and the favorable health and fitness results he obtained at that age by “re-booting” his commitment to health and fitness.

As stated in the book’s Introduction: This book is about believing in yourself, maintaining inner strength, and understanding exercise, fitness, nutrition, and wellness. This book is also about getting younger instead of getting older, discovering your inner athlete, and becoming and remaining healthy and fit in both body and mind. This book is for people who have never exercised but would like to start; for people who would like to know more about good nutrition; for people who exercise but have not seen results; for people whose fitness level has declined and who want to re-ignite their fitness quest; for people who choose to be proactive about their own health, fitness and wellness; for people interested in the mind-body connection; and for people who reject negative self-talk and self-limiting stereotypes about life after the age of 50. All ages are welcome.

On Tuesdays show we had a guest calling in from Fiji discussing a book based in Canada and the Bahamas, today my guest Dilruba Z Ara called in from Sweden and we discussed a book based in Bangladesh.

While the story is set in Bangladesh it is one that can relate to woman around the world, and has proven so with its spread of popularity across many nations and it’s translation into many languages.

It is no surprise Dilruba has become an author of note, literature is in her blood through several generations.  Dilruba was nurtured on Greek mythology by her father, and her mother read her Indian fairytales as bedtime stories. Involved in literary activities throughout her childhood and adolescence, Dilruba had her first story published when she was eight years old.

Her novel “A List of Offences” first introduced in 2006 has been published in Bangladesh, Spain and Greece and is now available both in English and as an E-Book.

About “A List of Offences” (taken from Before It’s News blog):

In a lush Bengali village, a much-longed-for daughter is born with hair the color of sunlight on the river. The shock of the child’s silvery hair makes the midwife wet herself in the birthing room – an omen for village gossip. A life of misfortune is predicted for the baby girl Daria, who grows up not wholly unaffected by the rumors that circulate around her village every time she does anything unusual. The women in her family and in her village expect her to follow the cultural behavior in which women are taught from infancy to keep silent about things that may belittle their value in the marriage market.

Meanwhile, Mizan, an orphan boy, is stranded by the river after a flood. Daria’s parents shelter him, but off stage a servant of the family mistreats him. Because he can read and write, Mizan’s only recourse is to make a secret list of the mistreatments, which he titles “A List of Offences.”

However, Daria’s father, who also fears that village gossip will follow Daria to her future in-laws’ family, plans to save her from her inauspicious destiny by marrying her off with Mizan. But Daria falls in love with handsome lawyer Ali Baba and marries him. Leaving her village for the city and her husband’s home, she finds that his mother is obsessively bitter that he has married a country bumpkin. Daria forces herself to put up with her new family, for as a married woman she no longer belongs to her parental family. Both pride and fear of angering her own mother keep her silent for a long time, until she herself begins to make her own personal “List of Offences” and becomes a mother herself.

As Dilruba states…

“I think what inspired A LIST OF OFFENCES is that I have seen how girls are raised and treated. In Third World countries you can see a pattern where girls always have to fight for their rights – even within the family. They are told to keep quiet: you do not talk about things that might signal you out as an unsuitable girl in your social orbit; even if you’ve been raped you hide that. In the book, Daria’s story is only a micro version of the macro thing that has been happening within families… home has been the center of repression for girls for ages.”

Bob Ferguson is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, chatting about his debut book the thriller “Buzzard Bay”. Bob grow up in a remote region of Canada without electricity or telephones, spending many an evening dreaming of faraway places listening to an old battery operated radio.

Later these once dreamed about places became reality as Bob traveled extensively. His trips to the Bahamas formed a basis for Buzzard Bay for the show Bob contacted us from Fiji, where Bob writes and his wife teaches.

Enjoyed by both men and woman, Buzzard Bay gives readers all the adventure and thrill they could ask for in this unputdownable read.

About Buzzard Bay: (taken from authors site)

Bob Green and his family get the opportunity of a lifetime by becoming involved in a new farming project in the Bahamas.  A plane crash confirms his suspicions as to why the farm has been operating at a loss.  The project is not what it seems on the outside.

The discovery of drugs on the airplane put all their lives in jeopardy.  Instead of leaving well enough alone, Green decides to fight back. He becomes involved in a world of intrigue, sex, violence, and drugs.  In doing so, he finds out that there is a fine line between good and evil. An assassination attempt in Canada goes terribly wrong during a vicious snowstorm.

When the sky clears and the bodies pile up, it becomes quite apparent that this was no hunting accident.  Two men escaped.  Bob Green was motivated by the love of his wife and family, Henekie by the death of his best friend and mentor, but mostly by greed.  Unwittingly, these two bitter enemies become embroiled in a bitter power struggle between a Columbian drug lord and the CIA in the Bahamas.

As one reviewer put it…

Buzzard Bay” in an original plot with twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages. A fantastic mystery that includes sex, violence, drugs and romance. I loved his characters as they were strong and independent. I do hope there is a sequel to this book, I want to know what happens! Highly recommended for all readers.

Back in the 70’s Kathryn Falk decided to write a reference book entitled LADIES
OF THE KNIGHT. While in the process of tracking down publishers, booksellers
and authors, and compiling profiles and information, she discovered there was
no way of knowing what books were coming out, when and where they would appear,
which ones were best, who the authors were or how to write them. As she
recalls, “Historical romances by Barbara Cartland, Rosemary Rogers and
Jennifer Wilde were selling million of copies, she knew there had to be
thousands of women, maybe more, who were curious about this type of reading. This
was the start of what has “RT Book reviews”.

Romantic Times are the
undisputed experts at reaching romance book lovers and creating a promotional
medium for publishers and authors for the sale of even more romances started in
the 70’s. Today RT BOOK REVIEWS Magazine reviews every romance published and
rates it but it also reviews over 100 books in various other genres.

Next week sees the literary
world headed to Kansas City for “The 30th RT Booklovers Convention” which will host
over 1000 readers and 400 Bestselling authors.

Today I was lucky enough
to have two of the authors who will be appearing at this wonderful event as
guest on “A Book and a Chat”, to chat about the convention and their own books.

Brenda Jackson is a
mutli award winning author, with a 100 books to her name several of which have
gone on to be made into films, next week will be her 15th RT
Convention. She is t
he first African-American romance author to
make USA Today’s Bestseller’s List and the New York Times Bestseller’s List for
the series romance genre. Her books have such a following she hosts her own
cruise for her “literary family”.

Writing several different series she is scheduled to
release almost a book a month this year with “A Brothers Honor” coming out in
June and three more of the Westmorland, romantic western series scheduled over
the summer months.

Guy Cote, will be attending his first RT Convention with
his debut thriller “Long Live The King” the first in his “Charlemagne Saga”.
Like Brenda he will not only be signing copies of his book and chatting to visitors
but also be on a few panels and guest speaker events. His book allows him to
share his love for history and travel mixed up with suspense, action, adventure…
definitely a name for the future!

While the event covers the days there is also plenty to
enjoy at night with balls, dances and fun events scheduled every evening
providing more time for readers and authors alike to rub shoulders and chat
about the wonderful world of “RT REVIEWS”.

It was another of our one hour specials as I introduce to the audience and chat with another member of the “Class of 2K13” in the form of author Liesl (like Weasel) Shirtliff.

Liesl grow up in Salt Lake City, Utah the fifth of eight children, a childhood filled with magic be it from her love of dancing, singing, playing the piano or reading, she read Grimm’s Fairy Tales so often she wore through the binding.

Like the Brady Bunch, plus two she remembers summer when her parents piled all the kids in a 12-passenger van, complete with a license plate that said 8SGREAT, and drove to California where she spent magical summers on mountains and lakes and beaches. The fact she later had to drive that same van to school somehow takes a little away from the story.

Her love of music continued and she received a degree from Brigham Young University in music, dance, and theater, thinking her life would involve belting out show songs, this  changed with the birth of her first child, Liesl settling to the slightly quieter art of writing.

Now Liesl drawing from her love of fairy tales shares her debut midgrade book “Rump”.

About “Rump” (taken from OneFor KidLit)

In a magical kingdom where your name is your destiny, 12-year-old Rump is the butt of everyone’s joke.

Rump has never known his full name—his mother died before she could tell him. So all his life he’s been teased and bullied for his half-a-name. But when he finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. For Rump discovers he can spin straw into gold. Magical gold.

His best friend Red Riding Hood warns him that magic is dangerous—and she’s right! That gold is worth its weight in trouble. And with each thread he spins, Rump weaves himself deeper into a curse.

There’s only one way to break the spell: Rump must go on a quest to find his true name, along the way defending himself against pixies, trolls, poison apples, and one beautiful but vile-mannered queen. The odds are against him, but with courage and friendship—and a cheeky sense of humor—Rump just might triumph in the end.

As we heard during the show there were a few items that had to be changed along the way, such as the name of the donkey, however the resulting novel is a fairy tale master piece for all to read and enjoy.

As one reviewer put it…

I had never been a big fan of the fairy tale, Rumplestiltskin but this book changed my mind! Such a fun, humorous and clever take on the classic. I read it to my children ages 5 – 9 and they couldn’t wait for bedtime when they could listen to another chapter of this magical book full of trolls, fairies, bullies, magic and a surprising hero. One of the best children’s books I’ve read in a long time. I can’t wait for another book by Liesl Shurtliff.

As we learned there is another book based on Jack and the Beanstalk already on the horizon, and I for one can’t wait to read more from this talented author.

My guest today Chris Karslen is a native of Chicago, former police detective and now romantic suspense author she grew up with a love of history and books. Her parents loved traveling, a passion they passed on to her. Though her desire to write began in her teens, Chris spent twenty-five years in law enforcement with two different agencies before she decided to pursue her dreams.

Now an internationally published author, Chris has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Near East, and North Africa satisfying her need to visit the places she read about.

Having spent a great deal of time in England and Turkey, she has used her love of both places as settings for her books. “Heroes Live Forever,” which is her debut book, is set in England as is the sequel, “Journey in Time.” Both are part of her “Knights in Time” series, and soon to be joined by a third novel.

Her third book, released in late 2011, “Golden Chariot,” started her on the romantic thriller path, set in Turkey as described by Night Owl Reviews as…

5-Star review- As with her other books, Chris Karlsen has impeccably researched her topic. Golden Chariot is engaging and full of information and insight. I thoroughly enjoyed this smart, well-written story and am looking forward to reading more from this author. Josie–Night Owl Reviews.

This has now been followed by a second in the series which is already looking to be another hit for Chris in the form of “Byzantine Gold”.

About Byzantine Gold: (taken from Examiner blog)

Charlotte and Atakan, the hero and heroine from Golden Chariot are archaeologists who are assigned to work the recovery of a Byzantine shipwreck off the coast of Cyprus. Atakan is an agent with the Turkish Ministry of Culture, the investigation of artifact smuggling is one of his duties.

Prior to leaving for Cyprus with Charlotte, Atakan is seriously wounded by an old enemy he had imprisoned and is now bent on revenge. Atakan is still to be present on the wreck site but Charlotte will have to partner with another diver.

The unusual hoard of gold the wreck carried as cargo has brought a lot of publicity. It has also caught the attention of a militant cell of the PKK, a terrorist organization operating near the southeastern border of Turkey. The leader of the cell has managed to infiltrate the recovery team. His group plan on attacking the team’s campsite and stealing the valuable relics to sell on the black market. Monies from the smuggling operation will buy more weapons for the cell. The terrorist becomes Charlotte’s dive partner.

Charlotte and Atakan know the old enemy of his will strike at him again. While watching and waiting for the next attempt, the infiltration of the terrorist is discovered. Atakan and a fellow agent of the Ministry must race the clock to prevent the attack on the camp.

A great sequel to Golden Chariot” described by one reviewer as…

…another action packed thriller rich with description of Turkey. The romance between Charolette and Atakan continue to enthrall as an old enemy closes in determined to finish them off for good. There are intense and vivid character portrayals of the villain Tischenko as well as the main characters and terrorists. Karlsen keeps you in suspense wondering what will happen next and how it will all end.

The review end…”Highly Recommended” which is exactly how I feel about this great author.

Every so often I get contacted by or have the name of a new author sent to me to see if I think they “might be a good fit for the show”. It is rare that I ever say no, however if the author is a fellow Connecticut author and has written a book that seems to be already a “must read” for many, then you know I will have the author as a guest on my first available slot.

The name Suzanne Palmeiri was sent to me by a previous guest, when I read “absolutely amazing” and “close to perfection” and “magical” I knew that Suzanne would be on the shows first available slot.

Suzanne is a blast of fresh air on the literary map, and her debut novel “The Witch of Little Italy” is a book that has already international. At the same time as Suzanne was snapped up for a two book contract, she also received a contract for “I’ll Be Seeing You,” co written with Loretta Nyhan under the name of Suzanne Hayes which will be released in May.

About “The Witch of Little Italy” (taken from Dream World Book Reviews)

The Witch of Little Italy is the first novel by author and essayist Suzanne Palmieri.

Eleanor “Elly” Amore is pregnant with the baby of her evil and abusive boyfriend. Desperate for support and a fresh start after her theater-actress mother leaves her to deal with her pregnancy alone, Elly decides to reunite with her estranged aunts (all of whom are rumored to practice witchcraft) at their Bronx family home.

Although Elly knows in her heart that she loves her aunts, her memory is fuzzy about the time she’s spent with them, and she cannot recall exactly why her relationship with them is estranged.

Upon arriving at her aunts’ home, Elly is instantly reunited with her childhood sweetheart, Anthony, who also lives in the building. As Elly makes herself at home, she begins to blossom and thrive under all the love she receives. However, ghosts and mysteries dwell in and around the Amore home, putting Elly and her fuzzy memory to the test as she embarks on learning more about her past.

That same reviewer described the book thus…

If I had to use one word to describe Palmieri’s debut, it would be “magical.” Everything about The Witch of Little Italy screams magic as you read it, and the more you read… the more mysterious and magical this book becomes.

The book is story telling at it’s finest, on par with the classics of our youth.

As  Romantic Times Magazine wrote about “The Witch of Little Italy”…

“Suzanne Palmieri’s enthralling debut will make adult readers nostalgic for beloved books from their childhoods. Abundant with secrets, hidden passageways, magic and several enchanting mysteries, it’ll keep you on the edge of your seat until the end. The magic and witchcraft elements are subtle, enhancing the over-all effect of this clever, beautiful novel.”

With a second book already in the editing stage and the soon launch of I’ll Be Seeing You” The name of Suzanne Palmieri should be on your “must read” list.

On the day of the biggest horse race in England, “The Grand National” it was interesting that my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” has herself an interest in horses. Indeed as we learned during the program, Jordan Maylea Ramirez had “National Velvet” as one of her favorite films when growing up.

With both her parents have always been self-employed, she had an entrepreneurial spirit from an early age.  In April of 2005, Jordan picked up her first personal development CD given to her by my mother. At the time she was so embarrassed about what she was listening to that Jordan would quickly switch the sound to a popular radio station each time anyone approached her car. It was at that time that she first became fascinated with the subject of personal development and the impact a personal education can have on a person’s life.

This has not only lead to Jordan to a personal development blog aimed at helping thousands of people reach their God-given potential through a journey of personal development and education, but now to the release of her first book “Lifetime of Achievement”.

About “Lifetime of Achievement”: (taken from luxury reading blog)

Lifetime of Achievement is a small book by many standards but it packs a punch as it includes a ton of information on how to rearrange your life and form your lifetime goals. The author gives information on how readers can make changes in order to create balance and to live the life they have always desired. The advice includes seven steps to this process, which are: clarifying goals, developing a plan of action, getting up and acting on the goals the reader has set right now, facing fears, getting your head straight, adjusting your attitude and developing staying power and perseverance to stay in the game.

These goals are available for anyone to use, and can apply to any life stage. The book offers photos, lists of ideas, and fill in the blank exercises for readers to begin their journey to greatness. Most of the advice is standard fare, but I did especially like the section on facing fears. This section will be good for anyone who has recently faced a job loss and is forced to find a job in a different industry or profession to survive (quite literally) in this economy.

There is a fun technique that includes imagining a road to success and then developing a plan by looking at it backwards. By looking to milestones and benchmarks and knowing what will come next, it is possible to meet the challenges head on and surpass the expectations for winning in life. This approach allows a person to pay attention to the details and it will put that person in a better situation to take advantage of opportunities as they will be (you guessed it) anticipated and expected and therefore manageable.

As one reviewer wrote…

I loved this little book with a great big idea. It was an easy read with simple to follow instructions that made goal setting attainable. I have always been pretty vague about my goals, not any longer. I now have a step by step plan to reach what seemed like only a dream before. I really believe that I can get there now.

My guest on today’s “A Book and a ChatConcetta Bertoldi, has communicated with the “other side” since childhood. Like other children her imaginary play mates were initially blamed on an over active imagination.

Her first significant memory was around the age of ten when one of her visitors told her she would lose her oldest brother and never have children.  In time these predictions were accurate.

From those early days Concetta has not only grown and shared her gift  of being a vivacious psychic with people from all around the world. Featured in TIME Magazine and on The Early Show on CBS, she is now a New York Times Bestselling author.

Her first book “Do Dead People Watch You Shower?: And Other Questions You’ve Been All but Dying to Ask a Medium” became almost an overnight sensation rushing to the top of the New York Times best selling list. Comments such as “Sweet, funny, and reassuring . . . What makes Bertoldi stand out are her personality and positive energy, which shines throughout. An engaging, life-affirming read” litter the numerous reviews.

The success lead to a follow up book “Do Dead People Walk Their Dogs?: Questions You’d Ask a Medium If You Had the Chance” in which she again shared both enlightening and funny experiences from her busy life.

Her latest book is “Inside the Other Side: Soul Contracts, Life Lessons, and How Dead People Help Us, Between Here and Heaven”.

About “Inside the Other Side” (taken from back cover)

Psychic medium Concetta Bertoldi knows how it is: Heaven is perfection. Life on Earth is the tough part.

It’s here we need to meet challenges, learn lessons, and grow spiritually even as we cope with our sense of “aloneness” and “not enough-ness” or the loss of a loved one. Through all of this our guardian angels, those who have crossed to the Other Side—or “the dead guys,” as Concetta calls them—offer us loving, behind-the-scenes assistance.

In Inside the Other Side, Concetta explains the importance of the agreements we make with God before being born into a new physical life. She gives advice on dealing with life’s difficult issues: from relationships to a lack of abundance, from illness and aging to coping with loss. Concetta’s wise, witty, and uplifting assistance will help you get more in touch with the Other Side so that you can call on your own angels whenever they are needed the most.

As we learned during the show, there is so much more to be shared from this truly interesting lady who is now a full-time medium with a two-year waiting list and who is regularly consulted by members of Britain’s royal family, American celebrities, and politicians.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Concetta Bertoldi
