To quote a Yiddish proverb “What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul”. I am a great believer in this, and so is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat with Weston Locher.

Weston, had no chance with avoiding having literature as an important thing in his life. With a mother who was an English teacher, and a father who is a journalist, he was to a life of writing before he was able to consciously make the decision for himself. He chose to write humor because his parents made the mistake of telling him that he was funny. This is further proof he says of why you shouldn’t lie to your children. Mind you as Weston shared with us… “It’s handy having a mother whose and English teacher when it comes to having your work edited.”

Weston produced numerous short essays, including one “101 Ways To Hurt Yourself: A Children’s Guide To Recess” which was a semifinalist of “America’s Funniest Humor “ awards at humorpress.com. (You can find this essay at http://humorpress.com/Results/Essays-200910-200911/b-SemiFins/Essay-200910-200911-SemiFinalists.htm )

He launched the Musings on Minutiae humor blog in January of 2009 to collect his observations into one place where they could be enjoyed by everyone. Taking fifty of his blog essays, Weston merged them into his debut book “Musings on Minutiae”. These stories Includes his humorous and sometimes unbelievable childhood memories, tales of life in an urban apartment complex, the funny observations that come from living with felines, and much more.

During the show we found out more about Weston and his unique take on life, how he came to produce the book and what lessons he has not only learned with promoting this his first book, also how he has shared that knowledge on his blog for other new and would be authors. I myself love the way that he is sharing is book on Kindle for the small amount of only $0.99. As we discussed it’s not going to make him money but it will get his name out there, so when the 3rd, 4th or 5th books come out he will already have a following.

As Victor Borge once said “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people” so why not release your chuckle bone and listen to an enjoyable thirty minutes on today’s A Book and a Chat with Weston Locher.”

Jay P. White, is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”. During his childhood he spent many summers sailing on Lake Erie. In the early 1980s, he worked delivering sailboats up and down the Eastern seaboard, to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Jay is the author of four published books of poems, and numerous essays, articles, fiction, reviews and interviews. His first and by no means his last novel “Every Boat Turns South” is dotted with his own experiences sailing the Caribbean waters.

As Jay shared with us during the program, the book had a tough time plowing through the merky waters of publishing, being tossed from agent to publisher the journey has taken over ten years, but as anybody who has read the novel will testify, the arrival of “Every Boat Turns South” was well worth waiting for.

About Every Book Turns South:

It’s the story of Matt Younger, a 30-year-old boat delivery captain who returns to Florida after a 13 year absence to make a confession to his dying father. Matt wants to tell his father about a failed boat delivery from
West Palm Beach to St. Thomas, but the father only wants to hear about Matt’s role in the death of the favorite son, Hale..

The book is meditation on dying, mixed with love and forgiveness, all tossed into an adventure odyssey that takes you along routes that I’m sure Jay himself has sailed, and many of the characters he has met along the way.

During the show we learned about what else Jay has been writing, another book of poems and an historical novel set during Prohibition entitled, Whiskey and Hard Water. Add to that the fact that there will be three more books in the Matt Younger series; there can be nothing but good times and fair winds ahead for today’s guest Jay P White.

So sit back and listen to an enjoyable thirty minutes on today’s “A Book and a Chat with Jay P White.”

My guest today on “A Book and a Chat” has just produced her debut historical fiction novel, Noah’s Wife, though it is not the first the world has heard of this fascinating lady.

Growing up Teresa wanted to be an astronaut, until her father told her that was just not possible, stating that her eyesight was not good enough rather than the fact that at that time astronauts were male only. Instead she headed for a career in social working which led indirectly to her twenty two years in the police force.

However as we learned during the radio show, even as a rookie cop she still kept writing, with one of her yet unpublished works “Partners” coming from those early days.

Teresa tried her hand at historical fantasy, science fiction even a children’s mid-reader novel, on the way producing a screenplay, “Six Blocks Wide”, which was shown at film festivals in Alabama and Europe.

Eventually she started on historical fiction novel, Noah’s Wife (you just think you know why Noah built an ark!). During the show the whole historical aspect of how and why the characters directed Teresa to produce this book was shared.

About Noah’s Wife:

Noah’s Wife is Na’amah, a beautiful young girl with Asperger Syndrome who wishes only to be a shepherdess on her beloved hills in ancient Turkey, a desire shattered by the hatred of her powerful brother, the love of two men, and a looming disaster that threatens her world.
Na’amah tells her story and sees the world through the unique lens of a condition known today as Asperger’s Syndrome. Her savant abilities and penchant to speak truth forces her down a dangerous path in an age of change–a time of challenge to the goddess’ ancient ways, when cultures clash and the earth itself is unstable. When foreign raiders kidnap Na’amah, her journey to escape and return home becomes an attempt to save her people from the disaster only she knows is coming.

The Biblical account of Noah’s wife only gives us a nameless woman who bears Noah’s children and is with him in the ark. T.K. Thorne, an award winning author, has filled in the story with her imagination based on geological and archeological evidence of a great flood in the Black Sea region 7,000 years ago.

So sit back and listen to an enjoyable sixty minutes on today’s “A Book and a Chat with Teresa K. Thorne.”

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” has been traveling since she was two months old, spending much of the early part of her life in Saudi Arabia before moving onto London. N. H. Senzai and her book “Shooting Kabul” which is launched this next Tuesday; make a fascinating interview to be shared by listeners on the show today.

Shooting Kabulfollows young Fadi and his family as they make a harrowing escape from Taliban-ruled Afghanistan to the safety of California. But before they make it to safety, Fadi’s six-year-old sister, Mariam is accidentally left behind. The rest of the family makes it to California heartbroken, each of them blaming themselves for Mariam’s loss. On top of all that, they have to deal with the cultural confusion and isolation of being Muslim Afghans in America, especially when 9/11 hits.

With her enjoyment the history, back-story and details of what she is writing, as well as her own personal connection with Afghanistan, Naheed manages to weave facts about Afghanistan’s history and Muslim traditions into the natural progression of the plot. It is a book that young and the not so young people of all backgrounds, especially those from immigrant families, will relate to Fadi’s confused yet loyal character.

From her early days eating camel meatloaf a recipe that might not be in one of her over 300 cookbooks, to smuggling illegal books into English classes at her English boarding school this talented writer has come a long way.

During the show Naheed, not only shares some of these early days on the show, but also her plans for future work and how being with a group of fellow debut authors has helped her along the publishing path.

So why not sit back and listen to an enjoyable sixty minutes on today’s “A Book and a Chat with Naheed H Senzia.”

I have Shannon Delany as my guest on todays show, another of the wonderful group of authors who have their debut YA novel out this year. I am so pleased to have her as a guest to discuss her long awaited book “13 to Life“.

There are some books that the expectasion bubbles up amongst the YA readers, until you almost feel the launch has already taken place.

There are some books that the expectation bubbles up amongst the YA readers, until you almost feel the launch has already taken place, “13 to Life” is one of those books. There has been so much written and commented about this debut novel that it is somewhat of a shock to realize that the actual launch date is not until June 22nd.

Shannon shared with us so much in the hugely entertaining sixty minutes of today’s “A Book and a Chat” it is a case of where to start.

After growing up writing various articles as a freelance journalist, Shannon wrote a serialized version of “13 to Life” at Textnovel.com and won the first-ever cell phone novel contest in the western world.

This opened the flood gates to her writing future, and agent then a film request and finally a publishing house followed one after the other taking Shannon somewhat by surprise, so that when she was asked to send in her completed manuscript of “13 to Life” as she explained during the show some “solid writing was required in a short time”

From those early days Shannon went on to describe during the show the various steps she has made along the way to the launch of the book. The fact the second novel is already with the publisher, who are stating they like it even better than “13 to Life” and the fact that the third novel is in the editing stage.

We discussed the advantages of being a member of a support group such as “The class of 2010”, to share knowledge, inspiration and understanding along the publishing highway. As well as many other aspects both of writing and the production of this already much acclaimed book. As well as the bad rap that wolves get compared to vampires.

So why not sit back and listen to “A Book and a Chat with Shannon Delany”

About “13 to Life”

“13 to Life is about love, loss, the meaning of friendship and what really defines a man versus a monster. It’s very much about self-discovery as Jessie tries to figure things out after losing someone she loves very much. And did I mention it’s about monsters? Yeah. Different people will take different things away from the story–some will pick up the quieter themes Shannon has tucked in there, some will just read it for fun. To me, that’s the way it should be.”

On today’s “A Book and a Chat” I am very pleased to have making a return visit the wonderful children’s book author, Renee Hand.

Previously Renee appeared on the show chatting about her children’s series of books “The Crypto-Capers” the first book of the series “The Case of the Missing Sock” had just been released.

Since her previous appearance the talented author has gone from strength to strength producing “The Case of Red Rock Canyon” and “Legend of the Golden Monkey” books two and three of “The Crypto-Capers”. Renee outlined these books as well as sharing with us about two further books in this great children’s series.

As well as adding to the “The Crypto-Capers” range of books, Renee has started a new series of books for a slightly younger audience with “The Adventures of Joe-Joe Nut and Biscuit Bill” Case #1: The Great Pie Catastrophe.

This is another great educational series for young children. The reader will be reading and learning about various skills that will supplement what children will be learning about in school. In book 1 your child will begin to learn about deduction and reasoning as well as about animal tracks and some of the animals who make them. Book 1 is a cute and interesting story children of all ages will love.

From how the characters in her new books got their names after a family party to how the books are becoming a must for school libraries, “A Book and a Chat with Renee Hand” is a program all will enjoy.

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is René Colato Laínez the Salvadoran award winning author of I Am René, the Boy/ Soy René, el niño, Waiting for Papá/ Esperando a Papá, and Playing Lotería/ El juego de la lotería. His picture books have been honored by the Latino Book Award, the Paterson Prize for Books for Young People, the California Collection for Elementary Readers, the Tejas Star Book Award Selection and the New Mexico Book Award. He was named “Top Ten New Latino Authors to Watch (and Read)” by latinostories.com. René is a graduate of the Vermont College MFA program in Writing for Children & Young Adults.

René’s goal as a writer is to produce good multicultural children’s literature; stories where minority children are portrayed in a positive way, where they can see themselves as heroes, and where they can dream and have hopes for the future. He wants to write authentic stories of Latin American children living in the United States.

From early days he has always loved writing completing his first novel at the age of fifteen, this was closely followed by five other novels before life in the form of becoming a teacher overtook his writing challange.

As Rene explained during the show he soon realized that though he was teaching in a Spanish school there was a lack of books to read with the young children. So the novels that Rene had created soon came into being. This has led to many books being enjoyed as Rene shared with us by children all across the country.

René Colato Laínez has come a long way from the young child that fled from El Salvador to the United States, many of whose adventures can be shared in his novels.

So sit back and find out more about this fascinating and multi award winning author on “A Book and a Chat with René Colato Laínez”
