One of the shocks that authors find when their book is published is that far from the hard work being completed once their book is written and published, in fact it’s only just starting and the “getting it out there” is where the real hard work starts.

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is Brian Jud“, author, book-marketing consultant, seminar leader, television host and president of Book Marketing Works and founder of the “Connecticut Authors and Publishers Association” (CAPA).

Back in the 90’s Brian published a series of books about finding a job, including “Job Search 101” and learned that there was limited information about how to go about marketing your book once it is published.

Brian is now a book-marketing expert helping publishers market their books in non-bookstore markets to increase their unit sales, revenue and profits. He is the author of “How to Make Real Money Selling Books” and “Beyond the Bookstore” describing new ways to sell more books to special-sales buyers.

He is a partner in Premium Book Company which offers commission-only sales of nonfiction, fiction, children’s titles and remainders to buyers in special markets.

If you are looking for help in marketing in any shape or form indeed if you just want to learn more Brian offers many web sites, seminars, online discussions and seminars many for little or no money.

Book Marketing Works (http://www.bookmarketingworks.com/ ) provides book-marketing products and services can increase your sales, revenue and profits. Check the site for a huge wealth of marketing information.

Brian also shared with us about “The Association of Publishers for Special Sales” (APPS) which can help you sell more of your books and make more money with large quantity non-returnable sales to non bookstore buyers. Check out http://www.spannet.org/ to find out more about APPS including their first Annual Book Marketing conference as well as plenty of helpful tips and information.

Brandon Ellis could have had a career in sport being an All State Baseball and All League Basketball player, indeed he followed career involving sport obtaining his Therapeutic Massage License and becoming one of the most successful Sports Massage Therapists and teachers in the City of Portland.

All the time though his love of the written world was there in the background until one day he got an image in his mind that turned into an entire book series.

In Brandon’s own words…

It had been a long 10 hour work day. I’d just gotten home from work, dropped my keys off on the counter, then walked down the hallway toward my room. I was just entering my room, carrying my laptop, when I abruptly stopped. There, in my mind, came a single image—a tree in the darkness with snow all around. However, the snow wasn’t from clouds dropping flakes from above. It was from the tree itself, sprinkling snow from its branches and onto the ground. Then, like a movie, an entire story took place in my mind. I saw characters, action scenes, dialogue, and many other things. I quickly wrote down a synopsis of what I could remember, telling myself I’d get to it as soon as possible. When two years went by and I barely had anything, that’s when I started dreaming of the book. I saw ancient and sacred scrolls, more characters, more scenes, etc. I then wrote and wrote and wrote.

The result is the wonderful new YA fantasy series of which “The PureLights of Odm Totem” is the first book.

About The PureLights of Odm Totem” : (Taken from Authors web site)

Zoey and Coda are like everyone else in their small town of Gladstone, but that’s about to change–forever.Zoey has a dream, one that feels far more real than it should. A strange wolf with a beautiful violet crystal embedded in his forehead visits her. “Please help us,” the wolf implores. “Remember, Zoey, who you truly are.” Zoey wakes up, dismissing it as a silly dream. However, she soon realizes that it was far more real than she could have ever imagined.Coda is Zoey’s older brother. Like many boys his age, he has a craving for adventure and a loathing for his younger sister. He can’t stand it that she constantly gets in his way, joining in on all his fun and ruining it during the process. And the worst, according to Coda, is that Zoey gets all of the attention from their parents. A big drag in his mind. Then destiny arrives, one that Zoey and Coda must face together – if they want to survive.

Together, they journey to a place deep in the Cornell Forest, through a secret portal that leads them to an ancient world called Ohm Totem – to the place of the PureLights, the race beckoning for their help.
Caught between an age old war and finding their way back home, Zoey and Coda go on an amazing adventure, taking them beyond the veils, beyond everything they once knew and into the grasp of the unknown.

As one reviewer wrote…

Brandon Ellis creates a wonderful world and set of characters that both girls and boys (young and old) can relate to. It is so refreshing to finally read a fantasy book about the struggle between strength, love, compassion and forgiveness vs fear, rather than the overly used, simplistic good vs evil. As we journey along with the main characters on their magical adventures we can’t help but feel gently guided and loved in our own adventures in life. Oman Hart has given us a gift with this book, not only of fantastic entertainment, but of love and wisdom. I hope that this book finds its way into the hands and hearts of many young adults. My kids are reading it for sure. I think this book can actually make the world a better place.

With the second book due to hit the shelves in the next few months the name Brandon Ellis is one we will hear a lot more off. So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Brandon Ellis

When you have a guest on the show who is an award winning criminologist and internationally bestselling author of more than 60 books, including thriller and suspense fiction, relationship fiction, young adult mysteries, true crime, and criminology titles, not counting his own Wikipedia page then you know you’ve the making of one interesting and crammed show.

R. Barri Flowers has a huge range of fiction and non-fiction novels and show stories many under several different names with a growing fan base and in the process winning many awards. His background as a master of science in criminal justice, lad him to write numerous non-fiction books on criminology and true crimes, including the fascinating “Murder at the Pencil Factory”, before branching out into fiction writing.

His first fiction was legal thriller, Persuasive Evidence, which was followed by Justice Served and States Evidence. Persuasive Evidence was in fact nominated for a Romantic Times Award.

The romantic part has been followed up by Barri, writing under the name of Devon Vaughn Archer” he was the first male author for Harlequin’s Arabesque imprint. Midwest Book Review described his “Kissing the Girl Next Door”, as romance that “flows off the page.

Not having enough outlets to his talent Barri also writes YA both romance and fiction like his latest YA novel “Count Dracula’s Teenage Daughter.

His latest novel is another thriller about an FBI criminal profiler who assists the police in going after a serial killer…  “Before He Kills Again”.

About “Before He Kills Again”:  (Taken from Amazon)

Before He Kills Again is my latest thriller novel. Based in Portland, Oregon, the protagonist is Veronica Vasquez, an FBI criminal psychologist and profiler who returns to her hometown to assist the police in tracking down a frighteningly serial killer. The “Rose Killer” kills beautiful women in pairs.

Soon he sets his sights on Veronica, even as she tries to get to him first, while also seeking to repair a damaged relationship with her estranged sister.

Further complicating Veronica’s life is a romance with the lead detective on the case, who has his own issues he’s dealing with.

For anyone who enjoys taut serial killer fiction that reflects the verisimilitude that can only come from a veteran criminologist with an expertise on serial murder, you are sure to find this a compelling read.

With numerous series on the go at the same time and hopping from one genera to another it is amazing the talent that flows from today’s guest.

While Miralee Ferrell today’s guest on “A Book and a Chat” always enjoyed reading she never thought it would be calling for her. That is until one day, when in her fifties she attended an evening church service with a special speaker. At the end the speaker had a call for prayer, when Miralee went forward; they began to pray, and then suddenly stopped.  He told Miralee he believed God was saying she needed to write and it needed to be published.

Miralee went home, prayed about it, and felt a confirmation that this was indeed her calling, even though she had no idea what direction to go. Now, several years later, she writes because I love it and can’t imagine not doing so.

Her debut book was a contemporary woman’s fiction novel “The Other Daughter” and found almost instant success, and has since been followed by “Finding Jeena” the second in the series. After that early success Miralee got into her stride with the historical romance series “Love Finds You” series, all of which have been well received increasing the following of Miralee Ferrell.

Now a new historical romance series has been shared with her many readers, the “Love Blossoms in Oregon” series, of which the newly released “Blowing on Dandelions” is the first book.

About “Blowing on Dandelions”:  (taken from authors web site)

Katherine Galloway knew this moment of calm wouldn’t last, blown away like the dandelion seeds she scattered as a girl. In 1880, three years after her husband’s death, she struggles to run an Oregon boardinghouse and raise two girls alone. Things don’t get easier when her critical, domineering mother moves in. Katherine must make the situation work, but standing up for herself and her family while honoring her mother isn’t easy. And with a daughter entering the teenage years, the pressure on Katherine becomes close to overwhelming. Then she crosses paths with Micah Jacobs, a widower who could reignite her heart, but she fears a relationship with him might send things over the edge. She must find the strength, wisdom, hope, and faith to remake her life, for everything is about to change.

With further books in the series along with a new series for younger readers  already being planned the name Miralee Ferrell is a name that will continue to bring a smile to many readers faces. So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Miralee Ferrel

My guest today is Kim Carmichael a child of the 80’s raised on music videos and neo romantic, who has now taken her romance into the writing world, adding her own name to the modern wave of New Romantic writer.

Kim started writing online, sharing her work with an ever increasing fan base eventually leading her to write her debut novel “Closure“. Her books are replacing the old hospital waiting room fiction of Mills and Boon with youthful, vibrant and sexy with lots of romance, plot and realism.

About “Closure” (taken from Amazon)

There’s always the one… He’s one person throughout life you think about every so often, the one who leaves his unique indelible mark on you, the person with whom you need closure. For Margaret Collins that person was Mike Taylor.

After he broke her heart seventeen years ago, she left everything she knew and reinvented herself. With a new home, a new look and a new name, Riley Williams is now an up and coming journalist given the assignment to interview a Mike Taylor. She never suspected he would be her Mike Taylor. With Mike having no hint of Riley’s true identity, she must decide if she will make him pay for sins he doesn’t remember committing, or if she can wipe away the past and be with the one man who she has always wanted? Can she finally have closure?

This debut book has been followed by equally successful “The Promise”… “Demon Dolan Ciar exists on three simple words: desire, denial, and destruction. Every four years, he is allowed one night of earthly passion to punish a deserving female”.

Kim is also part of a wonderful e-book selection “The Naughty Box”… filled with 9 books that will thrill you, set your senses on fire and have you begging for a nice cool drink.

With a contract just signed for a set of 9 novels the name of Kim Carmichael will continue to grow in the world and modern romance.

Award winning author Christine Amsden is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, she has been writing science fiction and fantasy for as long as she can remember. In fact she remembers writing her first short story at the age of eight which involved cabbage patch dolls going to Mars.

Always wanting to be a writer, her career got put on hold for a few years when at age of 16, Christine was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease, a condition that affects the retina and causes a loss of central vision. She is now legally blind, but that has not let this slow her down or get in the way of her dreams.

Her first book “Touch of Fate” was released in 2007 about a girl that can predict the future but is powerless to alter its course. This was the book was soon followed by the award winning Sci-Fi/Dystopian Thriller “The Immortality Virus” a fast paced science fiction tale set in an alternative reality.

While taking a break from writing after the success of “The Immorality Virus” the  hero of her new series “Cassie Scot: ParaNormal Detective” arrived one day.

As Christine says in her own words…

“Cassie came to me in mid-February, as I played on the floor with me (then) 9-month-old daughter. I won’t go so far as to say she popped into my head fully formed, but it was close. I sat bolt upright, my eyes probably doing that cartoon bulge, as a light bulb appeared over my head.”

Not just the idea for his first book, but the whole series (four so far) has since been written.

About “Cassie Scot: ParaNormal Detective” : ( taken from “Review from Here” blog)

“Cassie Scot is the ungifted daughter of powerful sorcerers, born between worlds but belonging to neither. At 21, all she wants is to find a place for herself, but earning a living as a private investigator in the shadow of her family’s reputation isn’t easy. When she is pulled into a paranormal investigation, and tempted by a powerful and handsome sorcerer, she will have to decide where she truly belongs.”

As already shared, this is the first book in a four book series, something Christine shared about on the same blog…

“This is the first novel in a four-part series. Each book is framed by a mystery (helping it come to a stopping point, if not exactly a conclusion). The series is about Cassie herself – about a girl stuck in the middle, not sure who she is or what she is. It’s going to take all four books for her to figure that out, and a lot is going to happen to her along the way. It’s a coming of age story. A romance. And a lesson in learning to be yourself, instead of who you think you should be.”

Already with many reviews praising this first book, I can see the series being a must read for people of all ages.So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Christine Amsden

We have another one hour special on today’s “A Book and a Chat” as K.A.Barson or Kelly, a member of the Class of 2K13 is my guest. When you read about her addiction to peppermint chapstick and the fact she changes the color of her hair every 5/6 weeks you know that Kelly would be a great guest for “A Book and a Chat”.

Always a avid reader and writer, Kelly never thought that she could actually do it for a living, after all, wasn’t work something that was meant to be hard and boring, not getting paid to do something you liked?

In 2001 Kelly wrote her first novel, ignorant of the writing craft, it was at least the first steps down her literary road. This ignited the creative spark and she went on to learn the craft through various classes and groups and now not only is a writer but also teaches about writing as well, along the way winning several awards.

Her debut book “45 Pounds (more or less)” took five years to write, but the result has been well worth waiting for.

About “45 Pounds (more or less)”: (Taken from Martha Baden, Prescott Public Library on Amazon)

Sixteen-year-old Ann has a big problem. She has just two months to get into a bridesmaid dress for her Aunt Jackie’s wedding. She needs to lose 45 pounds, which would be hard enough without the complications of a new job, a cute boy, a mean group of girls, and blended families that leave her caught in the middle-and left out. Her mother is obsessive about her own weight and as the summer wears on, Ann begins to see just how troubled her families are.

Telling the story in Ann’s wry, realistic voice, this debut author effectively captures society’s preoccupation with size and the resulting alienation of an overweight teen. With a chain-smoking grandmother whose language is peppered with “fat-ass,” relatives and friends who are slyly disparaging about her weight, and a mother who constantly prods her about dieting, the message could be heavy-handed. But Barson lightens the tone with almost cinematic humor, ensuring that even the most painful scenes have a slapstick edge.
The ticking clock behind the wedding deadline gives the story real momentum, and while the ending is all nuptial jubilation, it is also a realistic summer’s end for Ann.

Already chosen as Amazon Editor’s Pick for Best Teen Book of July, “45 Pounds (more or less) has been called “Deliciously relatable with a lot of laughter on the side.”  To me it is one of those “must reads” and I’m sure will be another large step down the literary road for K.A. Barson.
