Every so often I get contacted by or have the name of a new author sent to me to see if I think they “might be a good fit for the show”. It is rare that I ever say no, however if the author is a fellow Connecticut author and has written a book that seems to be already a “must read” for many, then you know I will have the author as a guest on my first available slot.

The name Suzanne Palmeiri was sent to me by a previous guest, when I read “absolutely amazing” and “close to perfection” and “magical” I knew that Suzanne would be on the shows first available slot.

Suzanne is a blast of fresh air on the literary map, and her debut novel “The Witch of Little Italy” is a book that has already international. At the same time as Suzanne was snapped up for a two book contract, she also received a contract for “I’ll Be Seeing You,” co written with Loretta Nyhan under the name of Suzanne Hayes which will be released in May.

About “The Witch of Little Italy” (taken from Dream World Book Reviews)

The Witch of Little Italy is the first novel by author and essayist Suzanne Palmieri.

Eleanor “Elly” Amore is pregnant with the baby of her evil and abusive boyfriend. Desperate for support and a fresh start after her theater-actress mother leaves her to deal with her pregnancy alone, Elly decides to reunite with her estranged aunts (all of whom are rumored to practice witchcraft) at their Bronx family home.

Although Elly knows in her heart that she loves her aunts, her memory is fuzzy about the time she’s spent with them, and she cannot recall exactly why her relationship with them is estranged.

Upon arriving at her aunts’ home, Elly is instantly reunited with her childhood sweetheart, Anthony, who also lives in the building. As Elly makes herself at home, she begins to blossom and thrive under all the love she receives. However, ghosts and mysteries dwell in and around the Amore home, putting Elly and her fuzzy memory to the test as she embarks on learning more about her past.

That same reviewer described the book thus…

If I had to use one word to describe Palmieri’s debut, it would be “magical.” Everything about The Witch of Little Italy screams magic as you read it, and the more you read… the more mysterious and magical this book becomes.

The book is story telling at it’s finest, on par with the classics of our youth.

As  Romantic Times Magazine wrote about “The Witch of Little Italy”…

“Suzanne Palmieri’s enthralling debut will make adult readers nostalgic for beloved books from their childhoods. Abundant with secrets, hidden passageways, magic and several enchanting mysteries, it’ll keep you on the edge of your seat until the end. The magic and witchcraft elements are subtle, enhancing the over-all effect of this clever, beautiful novel.”

With a second book already in the editing stage and the soon launch of I’ll Be Seeing You” The name of Suzanne Palmieri should be on your “must read” list.

Every so often I come across a book on my show that I think
people should read, not just for enjoyment but in many ways for education as
well. While I have only been in America for twelve years thanks to a lot of
knowledge picked up doing “A Book and a Chat” one could say I know more about
the country and in many cases the people than many born and bred people in the
USA.
Today’s guest award winning author Barbara Everett Heintz
and her book “Pinkhoneysuckle” are cases in point. The book has already one several
wards and shows life, being mostly a memoir in an area that many American’s
just do not know about.

Barbara takes her  life story to
describe the “Hidden People” of Appalachia, basically 3rd
world existence,

Where the poor whites and blacks discriminated against and
segregated to the poorest mountainous regions of the Bible Belt, their strength
and identity shaped by religious values and the virtue of living off the land.

Through her own upbringing she is able to provide a unique insight to the Appalachia
in the mid-20th century, the class struggles and poverty, the family dynamics
and rich cultural traditions.

The book takes the reader through the harshness of the Appalachian way of
life that included abuse and incest, Barbara is able to portray the misery that
she lived through.

As one reviewer put it…

The author brings us into her life in Appalachia in a time when most of
America barely even knew they existed. She does not spare the painful details,
yet comes to an understanding of the people she grew up with, family, friends
and neighbors alike. She selflessly loves all as she matures, and her
understanding of the human condition grows.

To my mind it is a must read book, perhaps a true masterpiece. It shares about
how a poor family that lives in the hill country of the rural South. Written in
unique style that it is a pleasure to read, and has the reader constantly what will
be revealed next.

I enjoy reading Fantasy novels and amongst my favorite authors of such books is Terry Brooks, when I started reading about the writing of today’s guest Jack Whitsel, it reminded me very much of his Shannara series so you can guess I could not wait to get Jack as a guest on my show.
Jack has always been a storyteller from an early age creating stories pertaining to my STAR WARS action figures and Micronaughts. It was not committed to writing a novel until his sons were born. They really awakened the creative spirit within, and hisfirst book is dedicated to them. Mix with that forte for telling of stories along with his love of mediaeval history has lead to “Shadows of Kings” the first book in the Dragon Rising Series.
About “Shadows and Kings”: (taken from examiner.com)
Steel and sorcery clash as the Harhn incursion sweeps through the Hugue. Mankind faces its greatest peril without the Order Knights of legend to defend them. Crusading deep in the frontier, the Order is unaware of the savage beasts threatening their homeland as the Hugue realms muster their armies for war.
Between a cunning Harhn sorcerer, and an alliance forged with the decadent Darkfey, the horde threatens to extinguish the domains of men. Only Lord Baudouin and Lady Lucia, a Dragon Maiden from the Order, stand in the enemy’s path. One must find the strength to unify the realms. The other must discover the strength within her, while coming to terms with the agendas of her Order. But only together will there be any hope to repel the onslaught, and preserve the future for a mysterious girl they do not know.
It is not just me who thinks this could be the first on a classic series of fantasy novels, as one reviewer put it…
This is a great fantasy book and especially enjoyable for people like me who only dabble in fantasy. It has the creative elements of a Tolkien world with the more human, gritty and medieval elements of a George R.R. Martin book. You’d never think this is the author’s first novel. The writing is refreshingly fluid, the character development is fantastic and the storyline picks up speed at a perfect rate. It ends just as you’re completely engaged and leaves you anxious for the next installment!
As a person who was raised on Tolkien I am sure this kind of review meant a lot to Jack, and I’m equally sure we will hear a lot more of the name “Jack Whitsel”.

I recently read a quote about the author on today’s “A Book and a Chat” that “If Ian Fleming and Doris Kearns Goodwin had a lovechild, it would be Steve Berry”, my guest on today’s show.
It is always a pleasure to have not just such a famous author on the show but also as Steve makes the so show enjoyable and we always learn something new.
As we have learned before from Steve it was not always success for him. Originally a practicing attorney, Steve went through twelve years from the day he started writing to the day he sold his first book. Twelve years and 85 rejections (over five different editions) before he finally sold a manuscript. It was more that the world changed during those years, and what perhaps was not the fashion suddenly came back into vogue.
From that start Steve has gone from strength to strength, he now has 14 million books in print, which have been translated into 40 languages and sold in 51 countries.
From his first book “The Amber Room” through his Cotton Malone series which include such bestselling titles as “The Templar Legacy” and “The Jefferson Key”.
As we learned last year, Cotton is taking a much needed break with Steve’s 2012 novel, though fear not, as we learned he’s back in 2013 with a fresh adventure to do with the Tudors and set in England…
While Cotton has taken his break,  a new character has appeared in “The Columbus Affair” in the form of former Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Tom Sagan.
About “The Columbus Affair”: (Taken from Steve Web Site)
He was called by many names—Columb, Colom, Colón—but we know him as Christopher Columbus. Many questions about him exist. Where was he born, raised, and educated. Where he died. How he discovered the New World.
None have ever been properly answered.
And then there is the greatest secret of all.
Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Tom Sagan has written hard-hitting articles from hot spots around the world. But when a controversial report from a war-torn region is exposed as a fraud, his professional reputation crashes and burns. Now he lives in virtual exile—haunted by bad decisions and the shocking truth he can never prove: that his downfall was a deliberate act of sabotage by an unknown enemy. But before Sagan can end his torment with the squeeze of a trigger, fate intervenes in the form of an enigmatic stranger with a request that cannot be ignored.
Zachariah Simon has the look of a scholar, the soul of a scoundrel, and the zeal of a fanatic. He also has Tom Sagan’s estranged daughter at his mercy. Simon desperately wants something only Sagan can supply, the key to a 500 year-old mystery—a treasure with explosive political significance in the modern world. For both Simon and Sagan the stakes are high, the goal intensely personal, the consequences of opposing the other potentially catastrophic. On a perilous quest from Florida to Vienna to Prague and finally to the mountains of Jamaica, the two men square off in a dangerous game. Along the way, both of their lives will forever be altered—and everything we know about Christopher Columbus will change.
The book is a standalone thriller that is launched on May 15th however early reviews such as…
“There is great suspense, betrayal, lies, murders, and all of the other highlights that mark the Berry books.”
“if you like thrillers, particularly those with a historical background. The pace is fast, the history seems mostly factual, and the characters are well drawn.”
We also learned that not just next year’s book is written but the year after and even the one for 2014 are planned and underway. Steve Berry is one of those authors who have readers counting the days down until his next book is released, and I count myself as one of those readers.

Half way through today’s show I checked my emails and there were already two messages from listeners saying how much they were enjoying the broadcast. This it what makes it all worthwhile, knowing that others are enjoying the show. Mind you, whenever today’s guest appears on the show it is always a fun and entraining event, “A Book and a Chat with Kathi (Easy Writer) Macias” was no exception.

With over thirty books already under her belt Kathi seems to be able to produce three to four books a year, be fiction or nonfiction.

Today the main topic of conversation was her recent novel “Valeria’s Cross” which was co-written with “Susan Wales

The name Susan Wales is a writer well known amongst the book world, wife of film producer Ken Wales (Amazing Grace), she co-wrote the popular political thriller series The Chase, The Replacement, and The Candidate, but is perhaps best known for her Match Made in Heaven series of compiled true stories. With two etiquette books, Social Graces and Social Graces for Your Wedding, plus the entertaining The Pleasure of Your Company to name but a few.

When you add this level of writing to Kathi’s thirty plus books you know that the outcome will be a book well worth reading.

Valeria’s Cross:

In the 3rd century, pampered Roman princess Valeria falls in love with Mauritius, captain of the Theban Legion. She sends him off to battle, where he suffers under the schemes of a notorious pagan general with an ambition for power and a lust for Valeria. In a scene based on true events, the evil Galerius kills Mauritius and his entire legion for their Christian faith. And in a shocking turn of events, the grieving Valeria is forced to become Galerius’ wife against her will. Never has a marriage been set up for such failure. Valeria loathes her new husband, but he seems to undergo a change of heart, adopting a child for her and giving her power and authority, and even love. She struggles with the commitment she knows she must keep, and the love she knows she will never find again.

Kathi also shared with us her latest release in the “Extreme Devotion Fiction Series“,
No Greater Love” set in South Africa, was followed by “More Than Conquers” set in Mexico, next month the third book in the series “Red Ink” set in China, will be followed by “People of the Book” set in Saudi Arabia, which will come out April next year.

A lady who never seems to rest for a moment, Kathi shared with us much about not only her writing, but also how she developed into the wonderful speaker an writer she is today.

So sit back and enjoy today’s “A Book and a Chat with Kathi Macias

I am very pleased to have another one of the 2010 debut YA author, the wonderful Shari Maurer and her novel “Change of Heart“.

According to her family history, Shari has been reading since the age of three, or so the story goes. Not only that but writing to authors as well, even if they were dead.

Throughout her life hearts have played a great part in Shari’s life, from being born near Valentine’s Day and her marriage to her doctor husband. This and the illness of her own daughter lead her co-author of “The Parents’ Guide to Children’s Congenital Heart Defects,” published by Three Rivers Press in 2001.

During the show Shari shared with us what lead to the production of this book and how the book was aimed to help and educate also the fact that an updated second addition might be on its way soon.

Following the heart theme Shari has produced her first YA novel “Change of Heart

When you’re 16 years old, it never occurs to you that you might die. Emmi Miller’s got a fabulous life. She has tons of friends, does great in school and is an all-star soccer player who played in Europe last summer. It even looks like Sam Hunter, a totally cute baseball player, might be interested in her. And then she gets a virus. No biggy, right? Until the virus goes to her heart and weakens it so much that, without a transplant, Emmi will die.

Will Emmi get a heart in time? Is Sam too good to be true? What about her new friend Abe, who has also had a transplant and guides her through these scary times — is he just being supportive or is there more going on between them? And will Emmi realize it before it’s too late?

It is a book filled with reality, a heart gripping and honest story that young adults and not so young will be able to read, enjoy and relate to.

One of the items that Shari shared with us as we chatted during a very enjoyable and entertaining sixty minute show was her support or organ donation. As Shari told us, 18 people die per day due to lack of a potential donor. Shari has been working with Donate Life as part of her book release to try and get more people to become organ donors.

You can find out more about this at http://donatelife.net

Today’s show is one that people will not only enjoy but also make them think. A Book and a Chat with Shari Maurer is something to listen to and enjoy.
