Miriam Laundry is today’s guest on “A Book and a Chat” she writes books that empower children to make choices that promote confidence, happiness and responsibility. Miriam is the creator of the “I CAN” book series.

The passing of her 17 year-old niece from depression made Miriam reflect on her own children.  She was told to look for signs of depression in them because depression is hereditary.  This information changed everything for Miriam.

Deciding not to sit around and wait for these signs to appear, she took the proactive approach and filled my children’s minds with positive things.  Not being able to find many books that empowered them and that helped with self-esteem Miriam decided to write one herself.

The message of “I CAN” is very important, she believes that if a child learns to have an “I CAN” attitude early in life they will be able to use this later in their teenage and adult years when more difficult situations arise.

Her book, I CAN, is making a difference in children’s lives. “I CAN Believe in Myself” became a #1 Bestseller on Amazon on its release date in June 2013 and has remained in the Top 10 since then. Her book has received many endorsements by global transformational leaders including bestselling authors, Jack Canfield (co-creator Chicken Soup for the Soul), Dr. Kevin Leman, Carol Kline and many others.

About” I CAN Believe in Myself”

Molly has been chosen to be the next Star-of-the-Day! Most kids would be excited. Molly, however, is terrified! She just can’t talk in front of her class. How can Molly get out of this mess? Will her story about a three-headed monster work? How about a note from her mother (whose printing looks strikingly similar to Molly’s). She worries all day. She frets all night. “I CAN’T…I CAN’T…I CAN’T” Molly convinces herself. Or CAN she? Other themes in this book include letting go of fear, compassion, confidence and self-esteem

I believe this is a must read for children parents, grandparents and teachers and with two more books in the series already on the way I am sure the “I CAN” series is one that will continue to help many and grow in popularity. So listen now and share an interesting and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Miriam Laundry

Melissa Landers my guest today, was one of the Class of 2K13 however her debut YA Sci-Fi romance novels publication was delayed so she is now my first member of the Class of 2K14 to appear on this year’s “A Book and a Chat” shows.

Not that she is a debut author over all writing under the name “Macy Beckett” she is the author of “The Sultry Springs” series and “The Dumont Bachelors” series of romance novels.

Her novel “Alientated” though the first book she ever wrote, has taken a few years to finally see the light of day, but believe me it is a book well worth waiting for, and from the number of pre read request on sites such as “Goodreads” it seems many others believe the same.

About “Alienated”: (taken from OneFourKidLit site)

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

Alienated was finally released this month receiving great reviews many already asking for book 2 which is already written and will be released early 2015.

Talented author Kristina McMorris how she had been host of weekly TV shows since age nine, including an Emmy® Award-winning program.  While interviewing her grandmother for a cookery book she learned of her grandparent’s war time romance, this was the basis for her best selling multi award winning debut novel “Letters From Home”.

An account of a family friend – one who had fought for America and his brother for Japan which while researching lad her to brief mention of approximately two hundred non-Japanese spouses who had chosen to live voluntarily in the U.S. internment camps. Stunned and fascinated by the discovery, she instantly knew it was a story that needed to be told.  The result was another smash hit for Kristina with her novel “Bridge of Scarlet Leaves.”

Now Kristina is back on the show with what promises from the already rave reviews such as “Gripped me from the first page and didn’t let go.”  to be another “must read” this talented author, in the form of her latest novel “The Pieces We Keep”.

About “The Pieces That we Keep”:  (Taken from http://www.lybrary.com)

In this richly emotional novel, Kristina McMorris evokes the depth of a mother’s bond with her child, and the power of personal histories to echo through generations…

Two years have done little to ease veterinarian Audra Hughes’s grief over her husband’s untimely death. Eager for a fresh start, Audra plans to leave Portland for a new job in Philadelphia. Her seven-year-old son, Jack, seems apprehensive about flying-but it’s just the beginning of an anxiety that grows to consume him.

As Jack’s fears continue to surface in recurring and violent nightmares, Audra hardly recognizes the introverted boy he has become. Desperate, she traces snippets of information unearthed in Jack’s dreams, leading her to Sean Malloy, a struggling US Army veteran wounded in Afghanistan. Together they unravel a mystery dating back to World War II, and uncover old family secrets that still have the strength to wound-and perhaps, at last, to heal.

Intricate and beautifully written, The Pieces We Keep illuminates those moments when life asks us to reach beyond what we know and embrace what was once unthinkable. Deftly weaving together past and present, herein lies a story that is at once poignant and thought-provoking, and as unpredictable as the human heart.

Kristina McMorris always brings to the show not only her sparkling personality, but a fresh novel that to me is always a “must read”.

Today’s guest on “A Book and a Chat” is one of my most popular and frequent visitors Kathi “Easy Writer” Macias.

Kathi has come a long way since her early days of writing teens and children’s religious/help books such as “Life Can Be Tough” and “Mummy Where Are You”.

Her writing grow as did her following with the “Tony Mathews Mystery Series” before she found her calling both the literary market and in her life by spreading the word about issues and Christians around the world facing the ultimate test of faith.

Her book “No Greater Love” about forbidden romance, an unlikely martyr and an even more unlikely hero in South Africa, launched her “Extreme Devotion Series”. This was followed by “More Than Conquers” (Mexico), “Red Ink” (China) and “People of the Book” (Middle East). The series brought many awards and plaudits to Kathi spreading her name as she spread the knowledge of social injustice around the world.

Firmly now in the literary map, Kathi continued with her new “Freedom” series where “Deliver Me From Evil”, “Special Delivery” and “The Deliverer” which through powerful, heart retching words shared a story about human trafficking that brought a fresh influx of readers and awards.

After a break with the first of her Christmas books “A Christmas Journey Home” Kathi is back with another series that will touch people’s hearts as well as educate them, as well as a second Christmas story.

“Unexpected Christmas Hero” is Kathi’s Christmas book for 2012 which not only has proved yet another huge success but has a story within itself. A powerful story of the homeless and how it can happen to anyone at any time it is a novel that can bring tears and smiles.

Willard Parker, the homeless man who appears on the cover of Unexpected Christmas Hero was recognized by a family member and has now been reunited with his daughter and grandchildren.

“The Moses Quilt” is the first in a new “Quilt” three (for now) book series, which shares life and it’s issues.

About “The Moses Quilt” (taken from Kathi’s web site)

The Moses Quilt is a contemporary novel that bridges racial and generational divides. With a realistic and compassionate look into a twenty-first-century dilemma, multiple award-winning author Kathi Macias introduces readers to a confused and apprehensive young woman, Mazie Hartford. Facing major decisions about the love of her life and her future, she must also wrestle with a nagging question about her family’s past. She finds the answer to her questions in a most unexpected way—her great-grandmother’s Moses quilt. As her great-grandmother begins to explain how each patch represents a story of courage and freedom, Mazie must decide if she has the courage and freedom to overcome her own personal fears and prejudices.

As one reviewer described the book…

Kathi Macias is a master storyteller, weaving a tale within a tale, of factual acounts regarding the life of Harriet Tubman and the Gee’s Bend quilters. This book is incredibly well researched and accurate in detail. Family dynamics are beautifully presented through three generations of women and their relationships and importance to one another.

The characters in this book are well developed and believable, unforgettable characters to love and cherish. “The Moses Quilt” affected me on many personal levels, as a quilter, as a grandparent to a biracial grandson, my personal freedom from prejudice in my own life, and on an emotional level that is unforgettable. I highly recommend this sensitive, poignant, well-written, authentic story within a story! I will read this book again and again.

The book and the series once again will have the awards and request for more knocking on Kathi’s door.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining one hour special as I chat with my guest today on A Book and a Chat with Kathi Macias

Corrine Jackson and that is sounded “Cor-een” is one of the Class of 2K12 debut YA authors for this year, however in her case it’s not one book coming out this year but two.
Corrine wrote her first short story in second or third grade. Which she still has.. Oddly enough, it was about a girl whose best friend was being physically abused by her dad. That theme somehow made it into her first novel “Touched”, so maybe everything comes full circle?
She continued writing through her school year moving around a lot, she actually attended eleven different colleges, has earned bachelors and master’s degrees in English, and an MFA in Creative Writing. She is its lead to believe a dab hand in creating pies, cup cakes and the odd bowl of Mac and Cheese.
Along with a normal job and her educational studies  Corinne now has produced two totally different books both of which are due to be launched in 2012. “Touched” is the first book in a trilogy, the second already going through the editing stage with the third shortly to get underway.
About “Touched -Sense Thieves” (Taken from Corrine’s Web page)
Remy O’Malley heals people with touch—but every injury she cures becomes her own. Living in a household with an abusive stepfather, she has healed untold numbers of broken bones, burns, and bruises. And then one night her stepfather goes too far.
Being sent to live with her estranged father offers a clean start and she is eager to take it. Enter Asher Blackwell. Once a Protector of Healers, Asher sacrificed his senses to become immortal. Only by killing a Healer can a Protector recover their human senses. Falling in love is against the rules between these two enemies.
Because Remy has the power to make Protectors human again, and when they find out, they’ll becoming for her—if Asher doesn’t kill her first.
As stated this is the first of what is a trilogy; however in the mean time her she has a debut novel coming out next month which is totally different to Touched. In a way “IF I LIE” has somewhat a similar theme to “Touched” where a girl keeps a secret at great cost to herself. It is however a deeper book that covers the gray space between truth and perception.
About “If I Lie” (taken from Amazon):
Cheater. Traitor. Slut.
Quinn’s done the unthinkable: she kissed a guy who is not Carey, her boyfriend. And she got caught. Shunned by everyone she knows, Quinn loses her friends, her reputation, and her identity. Because Carey’s not just any guy—he’s a Marine who’s serving overseas, and beloved by everyone in their small, military town. But Quinn didn’t cheat. She could clear her name, but that would mean revealing secrets she’s vowed to keep—secrets that aren’t hers to share. So she stays silent, and waits for Carey to come home.
Then Carey goes MIA, and Quinn must decide how far she’ll go to protect her boyfriend…and her promise.
As one reviewer put it… “If I Lie” is easily one of the better written contemporary debuts I’ve come across this year, if not the best. It is powerful, thought-provoking, and is beautifully written. While it touches upon a variety of subjects and something or the other is constantly happening throughout the novel, at its core, it is a character-driven story like no other. I guess if I had to, I’d describe If I Lie as a cross between The Scarlet Letter and Speechless, but really, it is a novel that manages to hold its head high and stand all on its own, for although it covers a similar subject matter, it also covers so much more. It is a novel not only about bearing burdens, facing a cold shoulder of shame, torn families, friendship, and the army; it is also a story about hope and perseverance and the ability to find strength and courage even in the darkest of times.
With two different styles yet the same creative talent, I can well see the name of Corrine Jackson being on many YA readers book shelves.

How safe is your computer? Do you think the firewall and security functions keep you save and all your data?
There might be laws in place now and a lot more information to help make your online and offline life more secure, but we are still always hearing about identity and internet theft.
This is in 2012 but what about seven or eight years ago, before there were laws, before there the cyber policing that there is now?
My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is Angela Hart, in her book “Through Angela’s Eye” she tells the story of what happened to her and what she did to fight back. A fight that led to over 4,000 cases and over 64,000 arrests! About “Through Angela’s Eyes” (In Angela’s own words)
Identity theft is the number one crime in the United States right now. Read this intriguing story on how I tracked down those who had stolen my identity as well as the identities of millions of others. There are many things people can do to protect identity theft from occurring whether online or just in daily activities. Read how this landmark case, Operation Firewall changed the financial industry and computer technology as we know it today.
Through Angela’s Eye is the true, inside story of Operation Firewall. After a series of unfortunate changes in circumstances, my life took an unwelcomed turn. What started out as my personal battle against those terrorizing me by stealing my identity through my personal computer turned into the largest case of identity theft in United States history! Although the computer hackers caused me financial distress, once they threatened my life, I became angry and determined to get justice. Little did I realize that my journey would lead to the exposing of corruption within our own government up to the vice president and president of the United States and continued right up to the United Nations! Once the first domino fell, a series of events began to unfold.
Operation Firewall began in July 2003 as an investigation into access device fraud before expanding into an investigation of global credit card fraud and identity theft fraud. This case led to the inception of many laws being placed on the books to prosecute those who were perpetuating the crimes. The removal of spyware, malware, and malicious web sites that were trafficking in stolen identities, spam, hacking and even pornography are some of the positive results.
My account of “Operation Firewall” will make Watergate look like child’s play. It has led to over 4,000 cases and well over 64,000 arrests as of December 2005. The ramifications of this case will go on for years to come. As a result of the investigation, over $260 billion per year is being saved by taking these criminals off the streets. It was a war that was fought without weapons but used computers coupled with a woman’s intuition and common sense!
The first chapter of the book deals with my experience with purchasing a web builder and setting up an e-commerce web site. The online blog documents the ordeal in detail. When I discovered that they had stolen my identity, I listed all of the steps someone needs to do to stop the identity theft. Stealing my identity was not enough for them, but they were also stealing the identities of those who were making purchases through the website. Not only was the website designed so that they had a view of all the credit information someone inputs online to place an order, my computer had been compromised.
Next I go into how I figured out my computer had been hacked and who was behind it. By exposing why, who, and how they accomplished this, it helps the reader to discern what signs to look for. Thinking I was protected by a firewall and antivirus program was a false sense of security since my original computer guy had installed the original Trojan and key logger.
Two chats with the hackers are in the book. I put them in for a few reasons. First, I wanted to keep the interest of young people. In the first chat I was able to get one of the hackers to expose and admit to what he had done a few years earlier. In the second chat, I did to the hacker what he did to me except I did not threaten his life. The lesson was you don’t know for sure who you are talking to online, nor do you know what they are involved in.
The one who hacked my computer was the same one who hacked T-Mobile and stole Paris Hilton’s address book, the Bank of America thefts, the MasterCard/Visa 20 million addresses, Citibank, etc. Over 4000 cases started as a result. The book is still tying into current events.
The story takes a turn when my computer guy and I are the only 2 people who know about the File. Without us in the picture, they would be able to backdate it to try to use it as the excuse of why the US went to war. I expose those within the government who were involved in the attempted cover up as well as exposing the news stories that were altered to try to scare us into backing off the case and accepting their so-called offer of the witness protection program when in reality it would be only to protect their secrets and we were going to be removed from our lives. Instead, they were all arrested and sitting behind bars.
All 48 of the original hackers involved in Operation Firewall have all been arrested and convicted. This case let to over 4,000 cases and 64,000 arrests as of December 2005. All of the threats and apologies were done in writing. I use documentation throughout the book and link it together with the story, all in chronological order. It exposed a world-wide internet mob ring that was bent on targeting people with e-commerce websites as well as secretly spying on people in the privacy of their own homes through their webcams.
The letter to my cable company was also included since they were involved. The threats from the government as well as the apologies were also published since I had these in writing. Some of the names and locations were changed.
Angela’s goal is to help educate people about identity theft/cyber bullying by showing them how and why they did this and how to get them to expose themselves.  The book I believe is a must for all and is an eye opener for everybody who uses the internet. I highly recommend this book

With almost 400 shows under the “Book and a Chat” belt we’ve had many guests appearing several times on shows, today I am very pleased to have one of our most popular and prolific authors back on the show, the one and only Kathi Macias.

Always an interesting and entertaining guest, Kathi shared with us about a new series of three books she has written, once again touching on something that will not only make the reader will enjoy reading about but also make them think.

The first book in the new series is called “Deliver Me From Evil” the start of a series which goes into the world of slavery, or human trafficking. As Kathi shared with us during the show, there are estimated to the 27 million people around the world involved in human trafficking, with upwards of 300,000 in the USA.

In “Deliver Me From Evil” we meet Maria who has been taken by her Uncle to be sold at sixteen she is one of the oldest – she has seen many children die in the conditions Readers will also meet 18-year-old, Bible-college-bound Jonathan and his 16-year-old sister, Leah, whose paths cross Mara’s and who become involved in her dramatic rescue.

Interwoven between the stories of Mara, Jonathan, and Leah is the heartbreaking story of another young woman in captivity in the Golden Triangle of Thailand, whose past life mysteriously connects to the young people in San Diego.
As one reviewer put it…

Growing up in New Zealand , we don’t at times realise how blessed and safe though of course we are not short of the horrific crimes that occur but compared to America and other countries we are quite lucky.

Deliver Me From Evil touches base on a topic that scarily enough does happen and more often than not , the number of victims are higher in statistics than the number of survivors and escapees. Overseas, we read that Human Trafficking is one of the biggest crimes – Children mainly from countries like Mexico, South American Countries are taken or sold from their homes by their families with hope that they can get a better life over in America – across the borders. However , more often than not the families of the children who are used for Human Trafficking aren’t aware of the consequences as they believe their child is better off when in fact -they are worst off as they are beaten, sold, kept in captivity and not nurtured for.

These children are sold to the highest bidder and used for Prostitution etc. It is a game to many people, but for the girls -they have to learn to stay strong as only the strong will survive. .. (The Phantom Paragrapher)

Kathi told us how she struggled with writing this book series, as even for her the subject and just what she found out from her investigation went to some very dark areas.

I am sure this will be yet another “smash hit” of a series for Kathi.

On a lighter note, Kathi also has he first but by no means the last “Christmas Book” coming out.

A Christmas Journey Home” tells of two widowed woman, one driven by fear and a promise, the other by bitterness and revenge who must make their journeys along different pathways, but with the same destination: a barn full of animals that stands waiting for them on Christmas Eve.

Forced to face their personal demons, Isabella and Miriam soon discover a common yearning that will bind them together in a most miraculous way.

As always Kathi left us with a snippet of her up and coming work, with a second Christmas book already penciled in for 2012, and the release of the further novel in the “Deliver Me From Evil” series, she will be working with other authors on a book series about a fictitious town. I’m sure we will hear more about that during a show next year.

My male YA author guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is antipodean author William Kostakis, chatting to us about his debut book “Loathing Lola”.

William who will be finished with University in three days from now, had his first success as a writer when he won the the Sydney Morning Herald Young Writer of the Year for a story called “Bing Me”.

His novel “Loathing Lola” he began working on when he was 11 years old, and has since been refining it, sometimes, especially in the early days due to computer viruses and lack of backups, the whole story having to be re-written. He scored his first publishing contract at 17, while still completing his final year of high school.

Over the edits the book went from being written in third person to being written in first person in the voice of one of the female characters. As William shared with us in a fun and humorous program this was changing of person also removed much of the “ad lib” entries added by his own voice to the original edit, though as we learned as the show went on there are still a few of the satirical lines still to be found as you read through the book.

Loathing Lola:
As one of the bloggers(Persnickety Snark) reviewed about the book…

Fifteen-year-old Courtney Marlow didn’t exactly think it through. She thought the offer to have her life broadcast on national television was the perfect solution to her family’s financial troubles.

She was wrong.

Mackenzie Dahl, the show’s producer, promised to show Australia a real teenager. Courtney was going to be a positive role model, someone on television without a boob job and an eating disorder.

Soon, everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame via a little bit of Courtney – especially her conniving friend Katie, and her stepmother, Lola. And Courtney is just beginning to realize that ‘ordinary’ does not translate to ‘entertaining’…

People have said of the book…
extremely funny“, “highly entertaining“, and “a witty tale of trust, teenage friendship, school politics, family relationships and teenage love that is propelled by regular humor, satirical characters and loads of drama… a popular addition to the mid-teen market“.

Wirtten in the TV age, the style obviously suits itself to being made into a TV special, something I’d love to see, sort of an antidote to reality shows.
During the show William shared with us several funny anecdotes and events which I’m sure brought laughter to those listening. With that sense of humor and the wonderful style of writing, William’s next book I for one will be looking for.

So sit back and enjoy today’s Male YA Author “A Book and a Chat with William Kostakis“.
