My guest on today’s program is Heather McLaren is a Cherokee writer living in southern Illinois with her husband and four children. She began her life in an unfortunate situation, much like thousands of children in this country. She was born to a fifteen-year-old mother who could not take care of her.

From such a start heather was lucky to find her new parents both caring and able to help her realize her own potential. They told Heather the sky was the limit when it came to what she could accomplish in life.

Life though continued to have issues and abusive marriage and the loss of her first child before she was 21.

Then came the birth of Kimber Liliana—a child the doctors said could never survive the stroke she had suffered in the womb. Seven long months later Heather brought Kimber home to the amazement of the doctors. Though Kimber is still bedridden from spastic cerebral palsy, she celebrated her eleventh birthday last May—a joyous event Heather never takes for granted.

Life shad not finished with Heather and she was then herself diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but instead of giving in to her disease, she picked herself up, met and married her soul mate and began writing fantasy novels.

The result is “Mythos” the first book in “The Mer Chronicles” and what looks to me like being a truly wonderful YA Fantasy “must read” series.

About “Mythos” :

True love was the last thing David Cooley expected to find in the Bahamas, But the moment he laid eyes on Faren Sands, he knew he had found the girl of his dreams. How could he know she was a mermaid from the lost island of Atlantis?

Because of the strict laws regarding human contact, the couple flee the consequences of their forbidden passion, while at the same time they struggle to survive a conflict that has been brewing between the mermaids and sea demons for millennia.

Once the epic battle begins, fate forces David to make a decision that will forever affect his young life. Should he stick by the woman he loves, risking his mortality for a civilization that hates him?

Heather herself states how she wrote the book to inspire people…

She wanted to embrace her husband’s kind and and protective nature, thus bringing David Cooley’s character to life. (Her son) Bryce’s loyalty shines through as David’s best friend, and (her daughter) Charlie’s innocent and inquisitive nature and (her step daughter) Dakota’s playfulness triumph in future books. Heather’s youngest child’s bravery and determination to live despite her handicap was inspiration enough to immortalize her in black and white. By creating Cindel’s character (for Kimber), Heather hopes that readers will see people with special needs as having the same potential as every one else.

Andre Phillip-Hautecoeur is not a writer, or that is how he defines himself, he is simply a person who had an urge to share something with an audience and write something about Paris. This he explains during today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

Paris is a city where romance, history, fantasy and enchantment meet, Andre’s novel “One Exquisite Night in Paris” is that and so much more.

Andre came to know and love Paris hanging onto the hem of his wife’s skirt. She’s Parisian, she’s everything French without constraint; she makes understanding all of Parisness a pleasure. An understanding which made him want to write this novel.

About “One Exquisite Night in Paris”: (taken from The Broken Bookshelf blog)

It’s a real story. A boy-meets-girl version of a girl-meets-boy story where she’s from Paris and doesn’t speak any English, while he’s from New York and speaks no French, and they only have one amazing thing in common. It’s a story for all who have yet to experience the most amazing night of their lives; a night impossible to live anywhere else but Paris…purposefully the most wonderfully enchanting city in the entire world. Enchantment, fantasy, luxury and fairytale all converge in only two places; once in our dreams and once when our dreams meet Paris. Everyone should live the perfect fantasy of “One Exquisite Night in Paris.”

It’s hard to give a genre to One Exquisite Night in Paris. The novel is an autobiography, telling the story of how Andre and his wife Eff meet. However, it is also a tour guide to the most amazing places in France and a lesson on France’s history and culture.

The novel alternates between Andre telling the story of him and his wife trying to start a life together, and his attempts to plan their ‘One Exquisite Night in Paris’. There are a few points in time where it may take a moment to realise that the story has switched from one tale to the other but it is generally a smooth read.

An unusual writing style is used in the novel, one which reminds me of something that was written in the late 1800s. Something about the style draws the reader in, especially since the writing matches the magical tone set in the novel when talking about Paris and romance.

“One Exquisite Night in Paris” is a novel is full of enchantment, fantasy, luxury and fairytale that converge in only two places; once in our dreams and once when our dreams meet Paris. The story distills into a perfect night; creating a memory which lasts forever.

After over 700 shows one of the great pleasures I have is returning authors, in today’s case of C.S. Lakin one I have known and followed through the every growing success of not only her wonderful fairy tale fantasy series “The Gates of Heaven” but everything else she has shared with readers along the way.

C. S. Lakin is the author of twelve novels, including the seven-book fantasy series The Gates of Heaven. She also writes contemporary psychological mysteries, including her Zondervan contest winner, “Someone to Blame”. She works as a professional copy-editor and writing coach and loves to teach the craft of writing.

In all her books she seeks to journey to the heart of human motivation, to uncover unmet needs, and show the path to healing and grace.

C. S. Lakin latest book being released next week is  “The Sands of Ethryn” the book 6 in the must read “The Gates of Heaven” series, able to be read as a standalone book as are all the others in the series it all leads to what, as we learned during the show to the 7th and final book which is currently being worked on.

About “The Sands of Ethryn”:  (taken from Amazon)

The ancient and acclaimed land of Ethryn is dying from pervasive drought, and while the king searches to find water, a mighty tower is uncovered in the desert. King Kael hopes the scroll found near the altar will tell of water sources, but when he touches the gemstone set in the altar, he falls into a coma that transports him back five thousand years where he is a slave building the tower.

Sha’kath, the wizard who oversaw the building of the tower all those centuries ago, had cast a spell that brings sand bubbling up from the ground so the workers can make bricks and complete the tower’s construction.

In the past, the king, whose is a young villager named Lael, is pursued relentlessly by God, given visions and declarations that he has been chosen to be a deliverer and a prophet , but Lael keeps fleeing. Then, when the tower is completed, heaven appoints him as deliverer, and he and his companions escape and head to their villages. God directs Lael to the sacred site and makes him the Keeper, then reveals his great power as he brings down judgment upon the world, confusing languages and scattering all in rebellion and defiance. Lael is shown the beginnings of Ethryn—a fertile and prosperous land that will become a great kingdom—and then he returns home to his family, where he fully embraces his destiny and delivers those who will listen. God then destroys his village with fire, but Lael leads his contingent to the sacred site and a new beginning.

At the end of his life, Lael—who has watched Ethryn grow and prosper and who has been a gifted healer—returns to the tower to place his poem in the chest and put the gemstone on the altar. Before he takes his last breath, he turns and sees a girl—who is Ra’daf of the future—and when he dies, King Kael in the future wakes from his long sleep. Upon awakening he finds Ra’daf nearly dead by his bed—for the vizier had tried to stop her from waking the king with the amaranth in the vase. Lael heals her, and the vizier flees, unable to locate his secret chamber, but intent on discovering the locations of all seven sites and destroying them all. Kael, upon reviving, now knows where the site is buried under sand and takes his people there, where he again is set up as Keeper, and now, with heaven’s blessing, water erupts from the ground and ends the drought.

The author is also now working on a new YA fantasy series “Shadow World” of which “Time Sniffers” is the first novel available.

Despite a storm causing severe program interruptions during tonight’s show, my guest Dina von Lowenkraft managed to get through the show and towards the end without line interruption. Mind you, the fact that Dina is in Belgium and it was gone midnight there, alone was a challenge, but in the end the show was well worth getting through.

Dina was born in the US and has lived on 4 continents, worked as a graphic artist for television and as a consultant in the fashion industry before producing her first but I’m sure not last novel. The ability to create her own worlds and share them with the reader is helped by her being a black belt in Karate and a keen horse rider. In her debut YA fantasy novel “Dragon Fire” Dina is able to paint with words the land and the characters that merge together to make a “must read” debut novel.

About “Dragon Fire “:  (taken from Amazon)

Some choices are hard to live with.
But some choices will kill you.

When seventeen-year-old Anna first meets Rakan in her hometown north of the Arctic Circle, she is attracted to his pulsing energy. Unaware that he is a shape-shifting dragon, Anna is drawn into a murderous cycle of revenge that pits Rakan and his clan against her best friend June.

Torn between his forbidden relationship with Anna, punishable by death, and restoring his family’s honor by killing June, Rakan must decide what is right. And what is worth living – or dying – for.

The story is set in arctic Norway which enables Dina to share a unique world where humans and dragons and other mythical creatures are the norm. She is able to introduce intriguing secondary characters in the book, which can only lead to further books from this “one to follow” author.

As one reviewer put it…

I was so involved when reading this book that I found myself caught up in the drama and splendor of this mystical realm. The characters were interesting and well defined and the story was interesting, exciting and entertaining.

I’m looking forward to reading her next book!

Reviewer… me too!!!

My guest today Dora Machado, is one of the few Latinas writing fantasy these days. Dora is the multiple award winning author of the epic fantasy trilogy “Stonewiser” series. She has now released a new novel “The Curse Giver”, which promises to be equally successful.

Born in America Dora grew up in the Dominican Republic, where she developed a fascination for writing and a taste for Meringue, before moving back to America where she now lives.

After a lifetime of straddling such compelling but different worlds, fantasy is a natural fit to her stories, something she has written with huge success.

Her first novel in the Stonewiser series “The Heart of the Stone”, won the 2009 Benjamin Franklin award for best debut novel. The second in the series “The Call of the Stone”, won the 2010 Independent Publishers Book Award’s (IPPY) Gold Medal for Best Science Fiction/Fantasy book of the year. Both books were also finalists in ForeWord Magazine for Book of the Year in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Category. The third novel “The Lament of the Stones” has received equal success.

Her latest book is “The Curse Giver”, while meant to be standalone could well develop into another series with readers already clamoring for more about Lusielle.

About “The Curse Giver”: (taken from “Review from Here” blog)

Lusielle’s bleak but orderly life as a remedy mixer is shattered when her husband betrays her and she is sentenced to die for a crime she didn’t commit. She’s on the pyre, about to be burned, when a stranger breaks through the crowd and rescues her from the flames.

Brennus, Lord of Laonia is the last of his line. He is caught in the grip of a mysterious curse that has murdered his kin, doomed his people and embittered his life. To defeat the curse, he must hunt a birthmark and kill the woman who bears it in the foulest of ways. Lusielle bears such a mark.

Stalked by intrigue and confounded by the forbidden passion flaring between them, predator and prey must come together to defeat not only the vile curse, but also the curse giver who has already conjured their ends
.

If you like fast-paced, plot-twisting fantasy, epic, dark, and yes—why not?—incredibly romantic fantasy, give The Curse Giver a try. I’m betting you might like it.

Brandon Ellis could have had a career in sport being an All State Baseball and All League Basketball player, indeed he followed career involving sport obtaining his Therapeutic Massage License and becoming one of the most successful Sports Massage Therapists and teachers in the City of Portland.

All the time though his love of the written world was there in the background until one day he got an image in his mind that turned into an entire book series.

In Brandon’s own words…

It had been a long 10 hour work day. I’d just gotten home from work, dropped my keys off on the counter, then walked down the hallway toward my room. I was just entering my room, carrying my laptop, when I abruptly stopped. There, in my mind, came a single image—a tree in the darkness with snow all around. However, the snow wasn’t from clouds dropping flakes from above. It was from the tree itself, sprinkling snow from its branches and onto the ground. Then, like a movie, an entire story took place in my mind. I saw characters, action scenes, dialogue, and many other things. I quickly wrote down a synopsis of what I could remember, telling myself I’d get to it as soon as possible. When two years went by and I barely had anything, that’s when I started dreaming of the book. I saw ancient and sacred scrolls, more characters, more scenes, etc. I then wrote and wrote and wrote.

The result is the wonderful new YA fantasy series of which “The PureLights of Odm Totem” is the first book.

About The PureLights of Odm Totem” : (Taken from Authors web site)

Zoey and Coda are like everyone else in their small town of Gladstone, but that’s about to change–forever.Zoey has a dream, one that feels far more real than it should. A strange wolf with a beautiful violet crystal embedded in his forehead visits her. “Please help us,” the wolf implores. “Remember, Zoey, who you truly are.” Zoey wakes up, dismissing it as a silly dream. However, she soon realizes that it was far more real than she could have ever imagined.Coda is Zoey’s older brother. Like many boys his age, he has a craving for adventure and a loathing for his younger sister. He can’t stand it that she constantly gets in his way, joining in on all his fun and ruining it during the process. And the worst, according to Coda, is that Zoey gets all of the attention from their parents. A big drag in his mind. Then destiny arrives, one that Zoey and Coda must face together – if they want to survive.

Together, they journey to a place deep in the Cornell Forest, through a secret portal that leads them to an ancient world called Ohm Totem – to the place of the PureLights, the race beckoning for their help.
Caught between an age old war and finding their way back home, Zoey and Coda go on an amazing adventure, taking them beyond the veils, beyond everything they once knew and into the grasp of the unknown.

As one reviewer wrote…

Brandon Ellis creates a wonderful world and set of characters that both girls and boys (young and old) can relate to. It is so refreshing to finally read a fantasy book about the struggle between strength, love, compassion and forgiveness vs fear, rather than the overly used, simplistic good vs evil. As we journey along with the main characters on their magical adventures we can’t help but feel gently guided and loved in our own adventures in life. Oman Hart has given us a gift with this book, not only of fantastic entertainment, but of love and wisdom. I hope that this book finds its way into the hands and hearts of many young adults. My kids are reading it for sure. I think this book can actually make the world a better place.

With the second book due to hit the shelves in the next few months the name Brandon Ellis is one we will hear a lot more off. So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Brandon Ellis

Along my 550 shows I have got to know many authors, some
I have even met. However today’s guest Tine Field Howe I have not only met, but
joined in her audio show narrating some of the characters during an “open to
the public” sample of her award winning audio book taken from the “The Tellings of Xunar-kun Series!”.
I first came across this multi-creative lady with her children
book “Snails-worth” which both my children loved. It was interesting to hear
during the show that this book has now also been made into an audio, with several
of the cast from the “The Tellings of Xunar-kun Series!”, taking roles
in the Snails-worth audio.
From Snails-worth I was captivated by the
first in the Xunar-kun “Alysa of the Fields”  which received many rave reviews and awards
and was soon followed by book two “The TrailFolk of Xunar-ku” which
again won the multi-talented Tina many awards an plaudits.
Book three of the series we learned is now in
the design stage, having taken somewhat of a back seat as Tina has moved into
Screen writing again creating several items ranging from a Romantic/Thriller to
a horror movie score.
It would seem no matter what this talented
lady turns her hand to, success is never far away.
About Alysa of the Fields (Also and award
winning audio book)
Hidden deep in the mountains of planet Xunar-kun, the
Field Folk clan believed themselves to be the only remaining people, other than
the distant Trailmen, to inhabit their warn-torn world. They were wrong. In
coming to realize her individuality, Alysa—a young woman of the Folk—risks all
to save her people from certain peril. As a result, long-hidden truths are
revealed, age-old hatreds are healed, and Alysa leads her people to a new way
of life
.
About The
TrailFolk of Xunar-ku
It is four cycles later. The Folk and Trailmen have
accepted that they are part of something greater than themselves. They have
come together as “the Seekers”. Their purpose: to find the true Parents of the
Orphans. But they find something much more insidious and more lethal than any
threat they have faced before.
As one reviewer wrote about the audio book…
Alysa of the Fields, by
Tina Field Howe, has already been hailed as a magical fantasy masterpiece. Now
the author has taken her story to a new level, creating a mesmerizing
innovation that will have an enlightening impact on the world of audio books.
Well now that Tina is hitting the big screen trail, who
knows what other masterpieces we will be able to enjoy from Tina Field Howe.

“Truly Unique. I’ve never read anything like this
before!”
is one comment made about Morrie Richfield’s debut novel “Mr
Breeze”
. But as we heard during today’s “A Book and a Chat” it is so much more
than that.
Phrases like “Imperfect, controversial and sure to ruffle some feathers (did
mine) but a brilliant piece of writing
” and “
I have never read anyhting like this before”

litter the reviews gained by “Mr Breeze”.

Morrie Richfiled has wanted to
publish a book since the age of fourteen however with a background of limited
education this never really happened until when his world was at a very low
level he decided this was the moment to let his thought take over and the novel
be created.
A year later and “Mr Breeze” was
created. Not your normal style of book, there are no chapters it is one
continual text, written in a simple and direct style, but this short book holds
a powerful, perhaps even controversial message.
About “Mr Breeze” (Taken from
Gather.com)
Mr. Breeze is a story that
challenges beliefs: About God, religion and human behavior. Author Morrie Richfield’s
first novel provides a view of the world through the eyes of a photojournalist
and a man who is doing incredible deeds across the United States. In the book,
Richfield reveals the frailty of humankind as well as the responsibility we all
have to each other.
Michael Ryan is a freelance photojournalist with twenty years of
experience in his field who has decided to stop chasing negative stories. His
new focus is to report on stories of people helping each other. As Michael and
his researchers track incidents from across the country, a common thread
arises: One man has been a participant in helping several people in miraculous
ways. After interviewing journalists who admitted off the record that the
stories they filed did not include the man bringing a child back to life or
saving and healing a bus load of elderly passengers after a bus accident,
Michael decides that this is the story he must follow. The man has not been
identified. All pictures that have been taken of him somehow failed to record his
image. Michael decides to find the mysterious good Samaritan. As it turns out,
the man who calls himself Mr. Breeze chooses Michael to write his story.
Once Michael makes contact with Mr. Breeze, he joins him in a
journey that involves making major medical discoveries and providing invaluable
assistance to law enforcement. As he travels with Mr. Breeze, Michael struggles
with understanding who his companion is and how he is able to do so many
amazing things.
Already optioned for a movie and with a follow up in the work,
this book will be a must read for many people.
It is as one reviewer put it…
Honestly, when I
finished this book, I just sat there for a bit….thinking….gathering my
thoughts. I went back to the beginning of the book and read the first few pages
again. This book is really nothing like anything I have ever read…
I had to remind myself
that this book is fiction. But, could it be true????

Corrine Jackson and that is sounded “Cor-een” is one of the Class of 2K12 debut YA authors for this year, however in her case it’s not one book coming out this year but two.
Corrine wrote her first short story in second or third grade. Which she still has.. Oddly enough, it was about a girl whose best friend was being physically abused by her dad. That theme somehow made it into her first novel “Touched”, so maybe everything comes full circle?
She continued writing through her school year moving around a lot, she actually attended eleven different colleges, has earned bachelors and master’s degrees in English, and an MFA in Creative Writing. She is its lead to believe a dab hand in creating pies, cup cakes and the odd bowl of Mac and Cheese.
Along with a normal job and her educational studies  Corinne now has produced two totally different books both of which are due to be launched in 2012. “Touched” is the first book in a trilogy, the second already going through the editing stage with the third shortly to get underway.
About “Touched -Sense Thieves” (Taken from Corrine’s Web page)
Remy O’Malley heals people with touch—but every injury she cures becomes her own. Living in a household with an abusive stepfather, she has healed untold numbers of broken bones, burns, and bruises. And then one night her stepfather goes too far.
Being sent to live with her estranged father offers a clean start and she is eager to take it. Enter Asher Blackwell. Once a Protector of Healers, Asher sacrificed his senses to become immortal. Only by killing a Healer can a Protector recover their human senses. Falling in love is against the rules between these two enemies.
Because Remy has the power to make Protectors human again, and when they find out, they’ll becoming for her—if Asher doesn’t kill her first.
As stated this is the first of what is a trilogy; however in the mean time her she has a debut novel coming out next month which is totally different to Touched. In a way “IF I LIE” has somewhat a similar theme to “Touched” where a girl keeps a secret at great cost to herself. It is however a deeper book that covers the gray space between truth and perception.
About “If I Lie” (taken from Amazon):
Cheater. Traitor. Slut.
Quinn’s done the unthinkable: she kissed a guy who is not Carey, her boyfriend. And she got caught. Shunned by everyone she knows, Quinn loses her friends, her reputation, and her identity. Because Carey’s not just any guy—he’s a Marine who’s serving overseas, and beloved by everyone in their small, military town. But Quinn didn’t cheat. She could clear her name, but that would mean revealing secrets she’s vowed to keep—secrets that aren’t hers to share. So she stays silent, and waits for Carey to come home.
Then Carey goes MIA, and Quinn must decide how far she’ll go to protect her boyfriend…and her promise.
As one reviewer put it… “If I Lie” is easily one of the better written contemporary debuts I’ve come across this year, if not the best. It is powerful, thought-provoking, and is beautifully written. While it touches upon a variety of subjects and something or the other is constantly happening throughout the novel, at its core, it is a character-driven story like no other. I guess if I had to, I’d describe If I Lie as a cross between The Scarlet Letter and Speechless, but really, it is a novel that manages to hold its head high and stand all on its own, for although it covers a similar subject matter, it also covers so much more. It is a novel not only about bearing burdens, facing a cold shoulder of shame, torn families, friendship, and the army; it is also a story about hope and perseverance and the ability to find strength and courage even in the darkest of times.
With two different styles yet the same creative talent, I can well see the name of Corrine Jackson being on many YA readers book shelves.

As has been said on previous shows some people have been born to write and my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” is one such person.
C.L. Talmadge at the age of 13 new she wanted to write a novel, however at that time she was not ready to do so.
