Andre Phillip-Hautecoeur is not a writer, or that is how he defines himself, he is simply a person who had an urge to share something with an audience and write something about Paris. This he explains during today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

Paris is a city where romance, history, fantasy and enchantment meet, Andre’s novel “One Exquisite Night in Paris” is that and so much more.

Andre came to know and love Paris hanging onto the hem of his wife’s skirt. She’s Parisian, she’s everything French without constraint; she makes understanding all of Parisness a pleasure. An understanding which made him want to write this novel.

About “One Exquisite Night in Paris”: (taken from The Broken Bookshelf blog)

It’s a real story. A boy-meets-girl version of a girl-meets-boy story where she’s from Paris and doesn’t speak any English, while he’s from New York and speaks no French, and they only have one amazing thing in common. It’s a story for all who have yet to experience the most amazing night of their lives; a night impossible to live anywhere else but Paris…purposefully the most wonderfully enchanting city in the entire world. Enchantment, fantasy, luxury and fairytale all converge in only two places; once in our dreams and once when our dreams meet Paris. Everyone should live the perfect fantasy of “One Exquisite Night in Paris.”

It’s hard to give a genre to One Exquisite Night in Paris. The novel is an autobiography, telling the story of how Andre and his wife Eff meet. However, it is also a tour guide to the most amazing places in France and a lesson on France’s history and culture.

The novel alternates between Andre telling the story of him and his wife trying to start a life together, and his attempts to plan their ‘One Exquisite Night in Paris’. There are a few points in time where it may take a moment to realise that the story has switched from one tale to the other but it is generally a smooth read.

An unusual writing style is used in the novel, one which reminds me of something that was written in the late 1800s. Something about the style draws the reader in, especially since the writing matches the magical tone set in the novel when talking about Paris and romance.

“One Exquisite Night in Paris” is a novel is full of enchantment, fantasy, luxury and fairytale that converge in only two places; once in our dreams and once when our dreams meet Paris. The story distills into a perfect night; creating a memory which lasts forever.

Rosalyn Berne has always known that she was different from most people.  Even as a child she was aware of things that others could not see or hear, experiencing the life force around her. As she grew older like a lot of things, this gift seemed to leave her as she dedicated her life to education.

With a BA, MA, and PH.D in hand, Rosalyn as a university professor she writes and teaches about engineering and technology in society and the ethical implications of technological development, often using science fiction material in her classes.

Then about 6 years ago the talents that had laid latent since she was a child started to return and with them something new that has since changed her life.

Returning to Costa Rica―a once–visited sanctuary—she sought solace from the world and hoped to begin healing from a painful divorce and the subsequent breakdown of her family.   Drawn to the horses that are part of the working farm-resort that was her retreat, she suddenly and unexpectedly received a gift―the ability to communicate with them.   And what they said changed her life.

In her book “When the Horses Whisper” Rosalyn shows the true power of horses.  Once they realized that Rosalyn was able to ‘hear’ them they opened up completely, showing her a world of strength, beauty and, most importantly, love.  She begins to realize how strong the bond is between horse and human and how anyone can communicate with them on a deeper level.   She also learns how they can help humans to heal from loss and pain as she begins to recover from her own grief, including the loss of a child, a traumatic childhood encounter, and the end of her marriage.

About “When the Horses Whisper” : (taken from Authors web site)

When the Horses Whisper shows the capacity of horses to help us heal the human heart. It expresses human language what horses have to say when given the chance to speak. It is a story about the bond between horse and human, and the communication made possible when the bond is based on love.

Conversations with fifteen horses most of whom live and work in Costa Rica, are featured along with their photographs, capturing them as individual beings in service to humans on a shared evolutionary journey. This journey amounts to the remembering of our whole selves in the wholeness of creation, especially the parts we split off, deny, and place in shadow because they are too painful. Horses, as the book shows, can help us see these lost parts, and call forth our courage to reclaim them.

For the author, these included the loss of a newborn daughter, the mental illness of an adult son, letting go of a thirty-year marriage, and childhood sexual abuse. The story recounts the equine healing work that helped in reclaiming her authentic self. This book is testimony to the power of horses and equine healing work in transforming life’s losses into a deeper human wholeness and a further communion with the non-human world.

On today’s “A Book and a Chat” it is a another welcome return to the show for a previous guest, this time in the form if matchmaker and I would add humorist Marla Martenson.  If you’re looking a read that will make you think as well provide a good laugh then her books are for you.

As we discovered on her previous visit from her early days when she wanted to be anything from a singer to a TV presenter, Marla had stardust in her eyes, which eventually lead her to Hollywood where her acting career included television commercials and print modeling, as well of course as the required stint waiting on tables.

Using this experience she has previously written  her previous books. Her first book “Excuse Me, Your Soul Mate Is Waiting” in which she combined her talent and wisdom with sure-fire techniques of the Law of Attraction to help you bring that special love into your life. This was closley followed by her second book “Good Date, Bad Date” a guide for single women who are tired of trying to figure out the secrets to successful dating. In her book “Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker” Marla takes her readers for a hilarious romp through her days in an exclusive L.A. matchmaking agency and her daily struggles to keep her self-esteem from imploding in a town where looks are everything and money talks.

This last book has now been followed by “Hearts on the Line” in which Marla continues her won story of sinking to some very low times when, as she shares… “if the 99 Cent Store didn’t carry it, she didn’t buy it.”

From these profound reflections of her life and struggles Marla weaves in  enough  himour to have the reader laughing out loud.

About “Hearts on the Line” (Taken from Amazon)

Marla in her second installment, is still firing Cupid darts at work, a
plush dating service she calls the “Double D”—which doesn’t stand for
dream date. She and her husband Adolfo work hard to achieve their goal
of leaving their small apartment behind and buying a home, but with a
boss who requires Marla to cross ethical lines, a tiny spark is all it
takes, and Marla goes from being vice-president of a multi-city
enterprise to unemployment. Adolfo’s passion switches to anger and then
resentment, Marla’s celebrity hob-knobbing, shopping in boutiques, and
pricey Botox habit all skid to a dead stop.

Bills pile up. Determined,
Marla turns to Craig’s list, connecting with a series of flaky
employers, and if the 99 Cent Store doesn’t carry it, she doesn’t buy
it. Broke and depressed, however, she rarely finds time to write. When a
former client calls and asks if she’d work with him as a matchmaker
privately, she shifts into a whole new level. Amazing things start
happening. Not only does she help people find soul mates instead of
trophies and sugar-daddies, she finds the emotional space to heal
personal traumas in the past, ranging from the bullying she endured in
her youth, a near rape, a disastrous previous marriage, and her father’s
death—an unusual experience involving the ocean’s kiss. Marla writes as
never before.

Adolfo is proud of her, but Marla still holds grudges as
they search for a new home. She decides to rekindle the flame in her
marriage and thinks she knows just the person to help: Chantal, a former
client who owns a spa specializing in Brazilian hot waxes. This proves
to be a hilarious blend of torture, comedy, and high hopes—a bit like
life itself. Along with her clients, Marla’s heart is on the line as she
discovers the powerful ways in which dreams are real.

So listen and enjoy about this fabulous author, on today’s “A Book and a Chat with Marla Martenson”

As they say, the show must go on, so pulling myself out of my sick bed (why is it always the bed that is sick?) I managed to chat and croak with the very interesting
J.R. Hauptman about him and his new book “The Target: Love, Death and Airline Deregulation”

J.R. Hauptman, is a retired pilot. His book is set in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West, and tells the tale of the tumultuous first years of airline deregulation and the effects it had on that industry and the people who worked there. There are many people today who believe it was, in large part, the rush to overall dLove, Death and Airline Deregulation back then that led directly to the economic chaos that threatens to overwhelm our entire economy today.

Why not stop for thirty minute and share this enjoyable and interesting chat
