When your father is Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, co-founder of the New Wave magazine CAHIERS DU CINEMA, and from her grandfather, French filmmaker André Cayatte (original THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES), it is not surprising that Diane Doniol-Valcroze as a young girl, she developed a passion for writing.

Born in Paris, France, Diane e earned a B.A. in English literature from the Sorbonne University, and an M.F.A. in film from New York University while apprenticing on the Lauren Hutton show. It was while at New York University she met Arthur K. Flam and together they have co-written screen plays for such films as Lionsgate’s PENNY DREADFUL, starring Mimi Rogers, and MGM’s HIT AND RUN, helmed by Enda McCallion and starring Kevin Corrigan.

Now the two of them have produced their debut book 41 STRANGE.

41 STRANGE, a first-of-its-kind e-book anthology devoted exclusively to “short-short stories of the strange and horrifying,” awaits just a couple of clicks away for Kindle readers who enjoy a good shiver up their spines. The book delivers a reading experience in the spirit of such masters of the macabre as Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King, Alfred Hitchcock, and Rod Serling.  Many of the stories were written “in the lonely hour of the wolf … in the pre-dawn darkness when you get those ‘waking nightmares.’” .

As one reviewer wrote “… gruesome and skillfully assembled… Each story is a quick read that abundantly satisfies the audience’s thirst and appetite for horrific plots… these short horror stories provide great entertainment…”

With a second book already underway, we will I am sure hear a lot more from these talented authors.

Lee Tidball is an award winning screenplay writer some of which have now been produced as novelts, but his original calling was as a teacher.

He became a full time writer after many years as a middle-grades teacher where he was able to share with his pupils the first jottings of his now launched books.

His novels fascinate and entertain both his middle-grade/young adult/family audience as well as Hollywood agents and producers. These include his graphic novel series “Princess Reborn,” based on his screenplay of the same name, his television pilot/series concept “Midnight Princess,” based on his novel “Hidden Talents; Ginah’s Journal #2″ (a prequel to “Princess Reborn”), his Christmas fantasy screenplay “Sandi Claus”, and his historical young-adult fantasy novel “Windfork Secrets.

Finding the market for his screen plays somewhat a closed shop he is now producing them as graphic novels as with “Princess Reborn”, which received an Honorable Mention in the Writers’ Digest 15th Annual International Self-Published Book Awards, Middle-grade/Young Adult category (2007).

About Princess Reborn: (taken from Amazon)

Lari’s puzzled. What’s Mom’s secret? And could it have anything to do with Lari’s, secret? Lari’s family will never be the same again when an unspeakable evil is unleashed on the world. A dark nemesis from mom’s phantom past, bent on ruling and revenge. The world will stand helpless against it. The time for Heroes has come again. One must be born, though she has no idea who she is. And the other must, against all odds, be REBORN.

With a publisher now picking up and re-launching some of his earlier work and more from the Princess Reborn series we will find the name Lee Tidball not only on the books shelves but hopefully soon on the screen as well.

So listen now and share an interesting, and entertaining show as I chat with my special guest today on A Book and a Chat with Lee Tidball

When Alan Gratz realized that “the force” was not with him, that he did not have the mental power to make model airplane spin in a certain direction, his dreams of becoming a Jedi master faded. Instead Alan started writing. At first a one page news sheet for people in his street called “Blue Spring Lane News”, shortly followed by a book he produced in his fifth grade called “Real Men Don’t Eat Spinach” (a play on “Real men Don’t Eat Quiche”), a copy of which still exists.

From this early start Alan went on to study creative writing, writing over 6000 radio adverts, plays, articles and two as yet unsold books. Then along came “Samurai Shortstop”.

The idea for “Samurai Shortstop” came when Alan was looking through a travel guide and came across a picture of a man in a kimono throwing out the first pitch at a baseball tournament in Japan in… 1915! Around thirty books studied later Alan had a story about a boy blending bushido with baseball, and Alan had his start on the road to publication from which he’s never looked back.

This first book was followed by the so far first two Horatio Wilkes mysteries, loosely based on Shakspear plays with as we heard during a really entertaining show links to modern day issues.

Something Rotten:

Loosely based on the Champion Paper controversy, laced around Hamlet, Something Rotten tells about a stinking-rich family. A reeking paper plant. A murder most foul. Something is definitely rotten in Denmark, Tennessee, and only 17-year-old detective Horatio Wilkes can sniff out the killer.

Something Wicked:

A Scottish Highland Fair turns foul when its beloved founder is found dead in his tent. Horatio Wilkes is on the case, but he’ll need all his snark and all his smarts–and a little “Amazing Grace”–to bring the killer to justice.

After this a jotted down idea of generations united through baseball, had Alan signed up for a fresh book before head even started writing. From this start perhaps his best novel so far “The Brooklyn Nine” came to life.

The Brooklyn Nine:

The story of nine “innings,” or nine generations, of Schneider children from 1845 to the present. Their lives and their enduring connections to Brooklyn, baseball, and American history.

Alan shared with us not only about his past books and what he is working on now, but also his next publication due out early next year… “Fantasy Baseball”.

Fantasy Baseball:

Aflying monkey in the outfield. A toad at short. Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz on the mound. Alex Metcalf thinks he’s dreaming, but the Oz Cyclones exist here in Ever After, where storybook characters live on as long as kids in the real world believe in them.

But Alex isn’t a storybook. To get home, he and the Cyclones will have to win the Ever After Baseball Tournament and earn wishes from the Wizard of Oz. Trouble is, the Big Bad Wolf wants a wish too.

To win the tournament, Alex and the Cyclones will have to defeat the wolf, play the best baseball of their lives, and find the courage to believe in themselves. But what good is believing in yourself if the real world stops believing in you?
