From ancient Greece to the 21st century, poets have gazed at the heavens, trying to unlock the mystery and beauty of the cosmos in verse. In his charming new collection, DARKLIGHT, Leonard H. Roller, one of those poetic seekers, leavens his fascination with the cosmos and love of writing poetry with a gentle humor that will leave readers chuckling while they ponder the great celestial questions and What It All Means.

In the 77 poems in DARKLIGHT, Roller employs a range of poetic styles – from classical sonnets to free verse – to present his unique vision of such astronomical concepts as black holes, dark energy, the “Big Bang” theory, white dwarf stars , multiverses, the possible beginning and end of our universe and the existence of God.

Readers need not be well-versed in such subjects – or in poetry itself – to enjoy Roller’s poems. His writing is user-friendly and will appeal to those who love poetry, are intrigued by cosmology, as well as those looking for something different, a touch of profundity, but refreshingly free of pretense and confusing obscurity. Roller’s ideas and writing style go down easily. Simply put, the poems in DARKLIGHT are fun.

Roller holds advanced degrees in journalism and literature, is well-read in physics and astronomy. His love affair with the heavens began as a “star struck” boy peering into the night sky through a telescope given to him as a birthday gift. Though infatuated with poetry throughout his life, he began to take writing poetry seriously after reading a book by actor Stephen Fry titled “The Ode Less Traveled,” a manual on poetic style and form.

“I discovered that I really wanted to write poems,” Roller says. Astronomy and things celestial became natural subjects for him. In time, he started to send his work to literary magazines, where many of his poems were published.

Roller’s poetry reflects his darkly humorous view of the universe. “It has both a light side and a dark side. I don’t know what God had in mind, but it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that He made the world – and us — tongue-in-cheek, a cosmic cocktail of tears and laughter.”

The imagery of Roller’s poems is striking and amusing. A black hole is likened to a gobbling troll, a quasar to a wedding feast, the death of stars to the fading of a movie queen:

As time and celestial taste go by,
They are no longer stellar queens.
Whether with a shriek or a sigh,
They leave the screen.

Roller hopes his poems will encourage readers to think a little about where we came from and where we’re going, “…about what we’re doing here and why.”

My guest today is Anthony D. Collins, who is the definition
of positivity and the embodiment of kinetic energy.
That is, his thoughts set
in motion truly have the power to bring forth change within. His defining
moment came in 2009 at the age of 34, when he realized he was unhappy and
sought out to gain his happiness. His testimony touches others and is proof of
how someone who once led a dark life can light a spark in others that
illuminates lives. His happiness is proof of what a life with energy,
selflessness and a spiritual journey can do. Anthony helps people understand
life isn’t about rushing to the finish line, but transitioning from one moment
to the next with success. “The number one goal in our lives should be obtaining
happiness within first. We are no good to anyone or anything if we are not
happy,” Anthony says. “Once we are happy there is nothing that we cannot
achieve for ourselves or our loved ones.”
Anthony has spread his inspiration to positively impact
others firstly across the airwaves co-hosting the Blog Talk Radio show “Laugh
& Tears
” which he was nominated for Best Male Host in 2011 and also
nominated for Best Show of the Year in 2011. Anthony currently
hosts “The Anthony & B.Fly Radio Show” on Blog Talk Radio which provides
informative and thought provoking topics that motivate their listeners to make
a positive change in their lives.  Anthony has also participated in
relationship panels.  As a man he is open freely to sharing his life
experience.
Now Anthony has shared this powerful insight in his book “Life
is Outstanding
”.
In “Life is Outstanding”, Anthony D. Collins allows readers
to not only read about his life, but also learn from his challenges. He also
provides the steps that he needed to take when at the lowest point, as well as
how he continues to achieve greatness in his life.
About “Life is Outstanding”:
Anthony has always had a purpose that he tried to deny over
and over again. But without any more delays he finally took all the
confirmations from friends and associates that his positive words should be
shared with the world. His life testimonies have helped people all over the
world. Anthony decided that he could do more and that is exactly what he is
doing with this book. He always says just sit back and allow him to do all the
positive work and fill your lives with inspiration.

If my guest had followed her childhood dream I could have been chatting to an interior designer on today’s show, instead Arnine Cumsky Weiss followed a career as a nationally certified sign language interpreter and a teacher of English as a second language. She has worked in the field of Deafness for over thirty years including signing at events from presidential speeches to a Broadway play, even at the childbirth of ten babies.

Along the way she has written six books, the first of which Becoming a Bar Mitzvah: A Treasury of Stories, was inspired by her oldest son surviving cancer. Arnine’s first novel “The Undefeated” was rolling around in her head for 20 years before she wrote it, using her own knowledge and experience. “The Undefeated” is a coming-of-age story of two young men set in northeastern Pennsylvania during the turbulent times of the civil rights movement. The book focuses on friendship and loyalty as each young man finds himself faced with adversity.

Now she has launched a new book “She Ain’t Heavy” which Arnine describes thus…

“In the aftermath of 9/11, I was fascinated with the stories of the people who were supposed to be in the towers that morning and were not. I wondered if they realized they were given a second chance and what they did with it. Although I changed the setting from New York to Philadelphia, I kept the theme of She Ain’t Heavy about getting a second chance.”

About “She Ain’t Heavy” :

Just when counter clerk Teddy Warner is about to be evicted from her Scranton apartment, she bumps into beautiful, brilliant, blond Rachel – her estranged childhood friend whose mother forbid their friendship thinking Teddy was beneath them.

Teddy and Rachel reconnect over hot chocolate and under New Year’s Eve fireworks.  Their discussion leads to an invitation. Soon, Teddy’s on her way to Philadelphia, where Rachel is a student, to share an apartment and begin an exciting new life in the City.

Teddy views Rachel as perfect.  Rachel can’t bring herself to shatter the image by letting on that she is having an affair with a married man. Just when Teddy is starting to feel at home, Rachel insists on some privacy.  Acting out her anger at being asked to stay away, Teddy indulges in a one-night stand.

When Teddy returns to their apartment the next morning, Rachel is being carried out on a stretcher – the victim of carbon monoxide poisoning. This unforeseen tragedy leaves Teddy alone in a strange city, with no money, no friends, and no connections.

As Teddy struggles to find her way, she meets a mentor at the same university Rachel previously attended who takes an interest in her, but with strings attached. She also develops a unique bond with the firefighter who rescued Rachel.  And yet, Teddy remains committed to helping Rachel get back on her feet, at a time when no one else who supposedly loves her can accept her in this diminished way.  Along the way, Teddy discovers her own strength in the roles of caretaker, lover, and friend.

If you love a strong female character, one with a lot of spunk and desire to survive against the odds, then pick up a copy of “She Ain’t Heavy”. We can all learn a thing or two from a character like Teddy. To start MYM (Male YA Month) on a Book and a Chat I was very glad to hand over the host of the show to the one and only Heidi R Kling, author of the very popular 2010 YA book “SEA“.

Fighting the threat of erupting children, something I myself know about, Heidi still managed to lead the show through various questions about my book “Across the Pond” my short romance stories at http://romance2read.com and why I am running the “Male YA Author Month”.

We chatted about why the month event was set up, following a challenge from YA Auhtor Alexander Diaz (Stupid Things), and how I went about getting a list of possible authors from bloggers, then contacting the authors to see if they were interested in being on the radio show.

I went through the guest we have receiving several oo’s and aa’s from those listening in the chat room, where it seemed many of the guests were indeed popular.

I even had time to ask Heidi herself what she was working on and producing after the success of “SEA”.

The end of the show was a revise of the MYM calendar of guests, a couple of anecdotes about England, and I even managed to answer a question about some of my favorite English saying/language issues.

On tonight’s “Book and a Chat” my very special guest Estevan Vega

http://www.estevanvega.com

As a young boy, Estevan Vega never really felt interested in the written word. Far more fascinating things like comic book superheroes and sketching fantastical beings caught his eye. But in the fifth grade, writing short essays for a standoffish teacher ignited a fire that is still burning. Using his imaginative father as a springboard for ideas, Vega set out to write a full manuscript. His dream to become a published author came forth when he was just 15 years old, releasing his first literary creation, Servant of the Realm,to the world, a story about a teenager who sees the future deaths of those he loves and tries to change it.

The Sacred Sin, his second book, was published when he was 18, and shows a darker edge and deeper intensity than his first effort. The Sacred Sin bleeds with honesty and emotion, and tells the story of Jude Foster, a cynical self-loathing detective, assigned to bring down a serial killer capable of stealing victim’s souls without ever touching them.

Listen and enjoy thirty minutes of enjoyable chat as Storyheart and Estevan talk about his writing, books anything else that could be fun.
