When your father is Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, co-founder of the New Wave magazine CAHIERS DU CINEMA, and from her grandfather, French filmmaker André Cayatte (original THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES), it is not surprising that Diane Doniol-Valcroze as a young girl, she developed a passion for writing.

Born in Paris, France, Diane e earned a B.A. in English literature from the Sorbonne University, and an M.F.A. in film from New York University while apprenticing on the Lauren Hutton show. It was while at New York University she met Arthur K. Flam and together they have co-written screen plays for such films as Lionsgate’s PENNY DREADFUL, starring Mimi Rogers, and MGM’s HIT AND RUN, helmed by Enda McCallion and starring Kevin Corrigan.

Now the two of them have produced their debut book 41 STRANGE.

41 STRANGE, a first-of-its-kind e-book anthology devoted exclusively to “short-short stories of the strange and horrifying,” awaits just a couple of clicks away for Kindle readers who enjoy a good shiver up their spines. The book delivers a reading experience in the spirit of such masters of the macabre as Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradbury, Stephen King, Alfred Hitchcock, and Rod Serling.  Many of the stories were written “in the lonely hour of the wolf … in the pre-dawn darkness when you get those ‘waking nightmares.’” .

As one reviewer wrote “… gruesome and skillfully assembled… Each story is a quick read that abundantly satisfies the audience’s thirst and appetite for horrific plots… these short horror stories provide great entertainment…”

With a second book already underway, we will I am sure hear a lot more from these talented authors.

Dan Mauruer is my  guest on today’s show in a way went from the dark side to the bright side some might say as he went from in the publishing trade to being one of those using the publishing trade.

Dan spent seven years working in trade book publishing, including stints in the editorial departments of both Doubleday and Houghton Mifflin. While supporting Doubleday’s Editorial Director and Houghton Mifflin’s Editor-in-Chief, Dan helped shepherd many notable book projects through the production process; among them John Grisham’s The Firm, Richard Price’s Clockers, and Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger’s Lost Moon, which became the film Apollo 13.

From that start he transitioned to a career in digital marketing, creating marketing strategies for brands as varied as Curious George, Peterson Field Guides, and The Polar Express.

Now full circle Dan has written a book of his own in the form of his thriller/suspense/horror novella, “Snow Day”.

About “Snow Day”: (taken from I’m Shelf-ish blog)

It happens each winter, and has for over 35 years. Every time the snow starts to fall late in the evening before a school day, the dreams begin again for Billy Stone. They are always the same – there’s a dark tunnel, and there’s blood, lots of blood, and someone is screaming. In this chilling childhood tale, Billy, recounts the events of one unforgettable day in 1975. On that day, he and his friends played carefree in the snow, until an adventure gone awry left him far from home, staring death in the face, and running from a killer bent on keeping a horrible secret.

Set in a time before Amber Alerts, when horror stories were told around camp fires instead of on the nightly news, Snow Day is a blend of nostalgia and nightmare that makes us question if the good old days were really as good as we remember. From a new voice in dark fiction comes a thriller about an idyllic childhood turned horrifying; a cautionary tale about how losing sight of the difference between feeling safe and being safe can lead to deadly consequences.

As one reviewer put it…

“So convincingly real, it leaves you reeling… [Snow Day is] very well written, chillingly horrific and believably supernatural. This one makes a great diversion with which to indulge yourself.”

As we learned from the show Dan is already well underway with a follow up novel ”How Does Your Garden Grow” so I’m sure the name Dan Maurer will be one to follow.

While some authors get their start listening to parents reading fairy stories or reading the likes of the Little House series, Hunter Shea however did his learning in front of the TV or at a drive and is the product of a childhood weaned on The Night Stalker, The Twilight Zone and In Search.  That being the case it’s no wonder that he has turned out to be a “Master of Paranormal Horror”.

Hunter is the author of such books as Forest of Shadows, Evil Eternal , Swamp Monster Massacre and Sinister Entity  he is also proud to be one half of the Monster Men video podcast, which along with his partner in crime, Jack Campisi produce a light hearted show with the approach to dark subjects. They explore real life hauntings, monsters, movies, books and everything under the horror sun.

His first big hit was “Forest of Shadows”.

John Backman specializes in inexplicable phenomena. The weirder the better. So when he gets a letter from a terrified man describing an old log home with odd whisperings, shadows that come alive, and rooms that disappear, he can’t resist the call. But the violence only escalates as soon as John arrives in the remote Alaskan village of Shida. Something dreadful happened there. Something monstrous. The shadows are closing in…and they’re out for blood.

Now in his latest release we are once again introduced to the Backman family this time in the form of John daughters Jessica in the free, yes “Free”  “The Graveyard Speaks”.

About “The Graveyard Speaks”:

Deep in a dark, snow-covered cemetery, a terrifying, moaning apparition rises from the same grave night after night. Even the most hardened caretakers won’t go near the Spooner gravestone on their midnight rounds. Only one ghost hunter has the will to face the unknown, but at what price? In the chilling blackness, only Jessica Backman is prepared to answer the spectral cry from beyond when the graveyard speaks.

Jessica also appears in his other new release “Sinister Entity”.

The Leigh family is terrified. They’ve been haunted by the ghostly image of their young daughter, Selena. But how can that be, when Selena is alive and well, and as frightened as her parents? With nowhere else to turn, the Leighs place their hopes in Jessica Backman, who has dedicated her life to investigating paranormal activity. Accompanied by a new partner who claims to able to speak to the dead, Jessica will soon encounter an entity that scares even her. And a terror far worse than she imagined.

A few months ago there was an event around the blogosphere called “The Next Big Thing” where author’s blogged about their current master piece being worked on or due to be released. I did a show jumping from one of these blogs to another sharing with the listeners various “next big things” I found. Since that show I have shared shows with many of those authors whose blogs I stopped at. Today is another one of those shows as my guest on “A Book and a Chat” is Nicole Cushing.

Nicole’s “next big thing” is her stunning debut novella “Children of No One”. When you read reviews that describe the book as… “Sadism, nihilism, poverty, wealth, screams, whimpers, sanity and madness collide in Nowhere, Indiana.” You know it is something different.

While a dark novel with many characters that one would normally just despise and in fact cringe at in many places it is written in such a way that you can’t but keep turning the page. The characters are so well described you can from the words immediately picture them in your mind’s eye.

About “Children of No One”: (taken from http://literarymayhem.com)

For Thomas Krieg, Nowhere is a miles-long, pitch-black underground maze in which he’s imprisoned dozens of boys for the past ten years — all in the name of art.

For two brothers, Nowhere is the only place they clearly remember living. A world unto itself, in which they must stay alert to stay alive. A world from which the only escape is death.

But for an English occultist known only as Mr. No One, Nowhere is much more…and much less: the perfect place in which to perform a ritual to unleash the grandest of eldritch deities, the God of Nothingness, the Great Dark Mouth.

While dark it will also leave the reader thinking, and in many cases asking for more, something Nicole already has underway in her next novel currently entitled “The New God”.

On today’s “A Book and a Chat” is young author Estevan Vega and his now novel “Arson“.

While in elementary school, Estevan wrote short stories for class, and to his surprise, did rather well. His love and discipline for fiction launched his desire to become a fulltime writer. When he was fifteen, Estevan published “Servant of the Realm,” his first novel. In August 2007, “The Sacred Sin” was published.

His new novel “Arson” is not a story of horror and terror, well not in the Stephen King format of horror stories; however it does tell a story of two young people whose lives are basically torture and torment. A story-lines that dwells somewhere in between fiction and reality.

The demons in the book are not monsters or murders, but rather inner demons. The book covers many issues that young adults face: peer pressure, uncertainty, family conflict and insecurity. With elements of suspense and terror as well as romance it is a book that will leave the reader wanting more.

During the show Estevan shared with us how this story as well as his writing style developed, enabling him to exercise some of his own ghost and feelings along the way.

While it is a schange in style from “The Sacred Sin”, the response Estevan has received from new readers and previous followers alike is a sign of just how far this young author can go. I for one can’t wait for the follow up novel.
So why not listen now to an entertaining thirty minutes of “A Book and a Chat with Estevan Vaga”.
